Got around to dying some feathers utilizing orange Kool Aid. I'm really pleased at how they came out. I used 2 cups of water warmed in the microwave to 170 degrees, 3 packets of orange kool aid, 3 ounces of apple cider vinegar, mixed all together let soak for 1 hr 15 minutes. I rinsed them under cold water and dried them.

Color looks good. May have to try it. Kool Aid packets are cheap. :-)

They look good. Ok so I assume you started with white feathers.....so ho did you control where you wanted the dye to stick? Or did you just brush it on the dyed areas?

Oh yea that looks good

Stickhunter,

Typically dyed feathers are submerged completely and it would appear he started with manufactured barred feathers rather than natural barred feathers.

I have used Kool aid for staining arrow shafts for years. I discovered it when my son was young and helping me build arrows and spilled kool aid on some new shafts. I had to use it to get the entire shaft died orange and they looked so good after being dipped in gasket lacquer I have been using it ever since. I can make orange wood shafts look almost like the old orange aluminum shafts. I have never tried it on feathers but will.

Stickhunter I did start with manufactured feather. I mixed all the ingredients in one of those disposable tin foil pans. After mixing the ingredients I put the feathers in and layer a couple of spoons across the feathers to keep them submerged. I like how the came out. Here is the picture of the foil pan I used.

The above post should have said laid a couple of spoons across the feathers. Also I heated the water to 170 degrees, I have heard that if you get the water too hot the feathers will curl.

They came out nice.

How do the colors hold up to sunlight over time. I keep a dozen or so practice arrows on my porch, not in direct sunlight, and some of the factory feathers have lost all color.

James this is my first attempt at dying with Kool aid so I can't answer that one. I let you know as the season rolls on.

IF the bodyman posts here again, he can let you know about the longevity of the color. I believe he has done the koolaid dye as well.

I've used the kool aid dye for quite some time and have not seen fading on the fletchings. They don't taste quite as good as time goes on---they lose their flavor quickly, but still maintain their colors. Packets are cheap so you can add as many as it takes to get the depth that you want---you can literally see the water clear up as the color goes into the feathers...

I use it a lot and no fade.

OOH. That's pretty rough stuff. Cider Vinegar and Koolaid.. Don't think I will be trying any archery punch any time soon.

Final solid orange, I think the barred came out better. But overall I'm happy. Thanks for looking.

Years ago some of the guys in our club were using Ester Egg Dye for feathers. The cashier at the local 7/11 dyed her hair a wild color with Kool Aid. I have never tried either but the feathers look really good, might give that a try.

Got a question Homey if I may ....

will leaving the feathers in the dyeing solution for a longer time intensify the colour?

From: Homey88
Date: 24-Jul-17

I would think so! I left mine in for a hour and forty five minutes. This is only the second time I have done this, so maybe others with more experience with the kool aid dying will respond.

Bought the Lemonade Kool Aide today. Hoping to get to do some yellow Turkey feathers this weekend. Ya'll keep this post updated as I will be getting all the sponge knowledge I can. Thanks Again.
