The last few years the Pine River Rec club in Elm Hall Michigan has allowed me a few friend's to harvest elm in order to build bows that we donate back to the club for a raffle. Last year we had 7 or 8 bows and the ticket drawing was intense, it was a great feeling to see so many new self bow owners walk away with huge smiles. This is my 2017 elm bow offering. Its 69" ntn and pulls a smooth 53# @ 28". I made it in the spirit of Howard Hill. The back is dyed with grey and yellow dye, which turns a bit green. I faded the tips in with steel wool and then wiped a few extra grey coats in mid way to break it up. Its quite a shooter, as they say.

This bow is uncommon in that it has 4" fades. 95% of what I most others build have 1.5-2" fades. I did this to sprinkle a bit of Hill seasoning on it. It does make a very smooth and stable drawing bow, but requires the O/A length of the bow to increase a bit. This bow as built from a 2.5" diameter tree tip top. Its very resilient wood.

Amazing work! That is a sweet tillering job. Not sure how long the drive is from south Alabama to Elm Hall, but I would just about do it for a chance at that bow. I love everything about it. It is in the spirit of a Howard Hill bow, but if I know anything about your work, I will bet there isn't a hint of string follow. Lol. You sure know how to make em PD.

Your club is lucky to have members like you Pearl. Have a great shoot, great raffle, and stay safe. Tiller looks spot on, as always for your bows!

Howard, it holds about 1" reflex. Its just a simple shooting, huntable bow.

Chris, any idea how much money the bow that earned the highest donation brought in last year? Or how much the bows as a group brought in?

I have seen some of Pearl's bows and they are OUTSTANDING made, looking and shooting. AND Pearl very generously gave my wife one of bows his self bows as a gift at the Marshall shoot this spring.

I plan on buying a handful of tickets for this one in a couple of Saturdays.

Mike I think we raised about a grand last year. Tickets are cheap, so that amount wont get huge unless we come up with 12-15 bows. We wanted to make the tickets affordable for anybody who wanted to try their luck.

We had considered making a plaque for the bowyer who sold the most tickets, it would travel each year, or not :) But, that's just not our style or why we do this. So that idea was nixed and we just sat back and enjoyed watching each winning number called. We were every bit as anxious as the people in the crowd hoping to win. And, it was a real treat handing the bow over to the winners and telling them the history behind the building of it.

That group, and you, are very generous with their time and talent. Only time I didn't enjoy you helping me was when you were keeping track of how many points you beat me by on the range:>)
