I have decided to back my hickory board bow with paper.My question is how many layers should be used? If just one layer do you put glue on the outside of the paper also or just leave it dry and apply your finish over it?

Depends on what you want the paper to do. If it's just cosmetic, which is really about all it is, 1 layer is enough, Then just apply your finish over it.

If you want security, skip the paper and go with silk. Any silk. Some fellas buy old ties, shirts or dresses and cut strips. Paper is almost worthless. If you are insistent on using paper then use titebond 3 to glue it down. The outside is sealed with the same sealer you will use on the bow.

I've never used paper so I can't advise on that but silk, linen and burlap will work. More on my site. Jawge

Thanks guys.I was thinking of going with silk but got impatient.I read some where that paper was surprisingly strong for backing a bow and was used quite a lot back in the day.Im quite skeptical about it myself.This will be my third board bow. the first two i backed with rawhide. One is still alive but one developed a crack in the lower limb.Just thought I would try something different on this one.

Jay Massie's book talks about using sinew and how strong it made his bows. I would think if paper was used back when it would have been made a lot different than today's paper. Maybe made with linen fibers rather than pulp.

I got brown paper on a roll it's like a grocery bag,,,,on a board bow or a bow w/a smooth back I'll use paper ,,I'll just paint tite bond loll on the bow,,,lay the paper smooth, then paint a layer over that,,it dries real smooth looks nice too,,I haven't broke a bow in a long time,,,but silk is by far the best way to go! The paper that was used for backing years ago was a paper phenolic type material. Easy enough to make if you have time, but not anything like regular paper. Much stronger.
Sinew has been used for eons as a backing. Not only can it add draw weight, it will also increase durability eponentially.
Silk actually has a stretch rate similar to sinew. However, it won't shrink like sinew when it dries. So, to get the same result youwould have to pull the bow in to a reflex before gluing it down.
