I did ask this on another site but maybe get another perspective.

Is there a difference between the two and is one any better then the other. Like weight, strength, durability, anything you might pick one over the other. Thank you for any info.

Micarta is a brand name phenolic. Phenolic is the material.

Correct me if I am wrong, but hasn't Micarta been made with paper, cloth, and other fibers over the years. I want to build some prickly pear scales for use on tips. Was just looking around this morning trying to find information.

Micarta has been made with paper, linen, and I'm sure other composites. Paper Micarta had issues with holding moisture I understand.

Prickly Pear tip overlays. Now that's got me wondering, cool let's see what your thinking. :-) JF

I have seen knife scale made with it on Texas Bowhunter. I'll go look and see if I can find a picture or two.

Here are a couple of them. I could not find the thread that I was looking for but found these using Google.

Well, those two look the same...here is the other one

I have seen some where the cactus skeleton is smaller and tighter. These are rather wide between fibers. Different color in the resins can give quite vivid looking scales.

TW...............George is correct...............re: preference, I prefer Linen, much better for strength and moisture........Had a bow(riser) made out of linen phenolic..........very happy with it........

If I'm not mistaken, phenolic has no reinforcement... just very heavy plastic.

Thanks guys. Can they have a color in it not all one color but mixed in. I'll have to go check and see if I can find some pics.
