I have a yew stave I got from Dean Torges and he told me he got it from Dick Robertson which interested me because I don't know of any other professional glass/wood bowyers who make selfbows too. I'm sure they're out there, and maybe they don't offer them for sale, but it's just not something we generally hear about.
In other threads I saw Dick's selfbows mentioned a few times and would like to hear more about them, maybe even see a picture if someone has one.
Whether they sell them or not, I'd be interested to hear of any such others, and see their work too if possible.

How about Jamie Miller, Deans protoge? Not sure if he would but I daresay he might be better than Dean was.I think he frequents primitive archer forum.

Most of the glass bowyers I know have no clue where to start on a selfy, and are mesmerized by self bowyers. Jamie posts on Tradgang mostly.

John Strunk use to make fiberglass bows but the glass dust forced him to stop. I recently had had him make me a beautiful Vine maple selfbow with some pretty wicked character.

I think there are quite a few bowyers who make glass bows but hunt with the selfbows they make by preference. That does not mean they make them for sale. My buddy Bert from Quartermoon Bows makes glass longbows and bamboo backed laminated wood bows for sale. Quite often he can be found with a selfbow in hand.

Lol, Pearly.
Yeah, I make several types of bows, including glass bows and selfbows, so I'm not soliciting folks in order to buy one... nor do I want to sell one... so this isn't at all about advertising, I just posed the question because I'm interested, as a bowyer. I'd like to see pictures of their selfbows and glass bows side by side. That would be cool.

I make both and hacked out my first yew bow per instructions of Hunting with the Bow and Arrow about 50 years ago. But when I want a really good self bow I build a nice glass bow and trade it to Pearl Drums for a Self bow.
(Grin) Works for me. God bless, Steve

i would not label myself a 'bowyer' per se, but when i first wanted to make a bow i perceived that self bows were more in reach of one with a non-existent woodshop and equipment. I was quickly to learn that if you can't find a suitable 6ft piece of timber - or even a large enough diameter of bamboo to back a ring-violated stave - you're stuffed. still managed about 8 attempts, including one heat-treated hickory longbow that lasted almost a year before a sudden fail on the back of one limb. South Australia just ain't the place for a self-bowyer! From there i realised glass bows can be made with just a hacksaw and sandpaper if you order your lams and riser pre-ground - so i did. Although it's a far easier process to glue and shape a glass bow than carve an entire self-bow, I feel like my experience of making successful laminated longbows has definitely enhanced my chances of making nice self-bows one day............if only I could find some decent bloody timber!!! not holdin' my breath.....

I make both types and had a recent takedown pictured here recently, but haven't posted any yet of my osage self bows. Might get around to it before too long.Working on a real gnarly stave at this moment.
