Don't know about funny, but the one of the best times I had at a shoot was at Meadville. They have a bucket of flu flu arrows at the aerial shot. My son was about 10 and shot bucket after bucket full of arrows for hours. Other kids saw how much fun it was and joined us. There was at least three of us dads that got wore out throwing discs and stuffed animals in the air.

My good buddy once missed high on a deer target. The arrow struck a rock or root on the far side and bounced nock first into the ten ring on the other side. Told him we'd give it to him if he could repeat it;-)

we came up to a small deer target with a sapling about five feet in front of the target and lined up with the ten ring, my hubby said "if I aim for the sapling, I will hit the kill", and he hit the sapling!! we died laughing, then said, bet you can't do that again! After he put two more arrows in the tree, we said it was time to stop!!

Just in case that got past anybody - TradArcheryChamp has a "hubbie" ;)

Similar story: at the local, I lined up a shot on a 3D turkey so that I had to shoot between a couple of big trees - the first was on the left side of the lane about 2 yards away, and the second on the right about 3-4 yards farther down.

First shot banged off of the near tree, caromed off the second, and went into the target close to the midline of the 8-ring.

Had myself a good laugh and thought "I couldn't do that again in a MILLION years, so I took another shot.

Bang.

Carom.

10-ring.

JMO, only a complete jack-ass would've taken a 3rd.

Last year at a shoot up in the mountains. Free range cattle in the area and one decided to "make love" to the buffalo target.

So this guy in our group had his arrow fall off the string just at release. Dry fire. Scared him pretty good. He inspected his bow and gingerly drew it back a little, then further, then further, each time checking for damage till finally he was at full draw with no apparent damage to his bow. When he got his courage back up, he stepped to the stake and drew his bow. Just as he reached full draw, another guy in our group snapped a large dead stick he had quietly picked up. This poor guy thought his bow just exploded. We were rolling for the rest of the day!

I was second in line to shoot at a standing bear target on a wooded 3D course. As another shooter came to full draw, a real live bear burst onto the scene and ran across the lane in front of the foam bear target. We were the first group of shooters on the course that morning. As we progressed through the course, we found two deer targets that had been very badly damaged by that bear during the evening. That was the second shoot that I attended that set up targets on Saturday only to have a Sunday shoot with bear damaged targets.

In the early 1990's I shot at the Southeastern Traditional Championship shoot in Georgia. Monty Browning was shooting in my group. Back in those days Monty shot arrows made from solid fiberglass shafts used for bowfishing. As approached the start of the course we came across a large boulder. "Hey watch this!" Monty yelled as he shot one of his fish arrows at the boulder to demonstrate how tough the arrows were. The heavy arrow arced through the air and slammed into the boulder with a shower of sparks and bounced halfway back to us. "One more!" Monty yelled. Unknown to some of us, this arrow had a blasting cap on the end of the shaft and when the arrow hit the boulder the cap detonated with a loud explosion. Throughout the course you could hear people yelling "Monty this" and "Monty that." Apparently it was not the first time he had done this.

We had an opposite happening than Julia above. We had a deer target on the shore of a large Mississippi lake. There was a one inch pine sapling about 2 feet in front of the deer's nose. I told my wife to just ignore the tree. Don't let it capture your attention. My wife is a pretty durn good shot, but she managed to center the sapling. None of us has let her forget it.

Lot of funny experiences. Watched a good friend - and one heckuva fine shot - shoot over an elk target. You could hear his arrow ticking off trees all the way to the next state over ;-)

Got to shoot this past weekend with a bunch of folks I'd never shot with. Was doing okay but completely fell apart for a stretch, kept dropping my bow arm my arrows all went low.

Aldo looks at me with a grin and says 'you looked at the ground, I saw you do it'. When I stopped laughing I pulled myself together and managed to focus well enough to keep the rest of my shots in foam.

Nothing beats a good coach ;-)

one year I was going bear hunting and went to every 3D shoot I could to shoot at the bear targets. and I couldn't hit the kill on ANY bear target whatsoever. must had been target panic.

another time I ran into one of the most confused person I ever met. I had already shot a scoring round and turned in my card. the club allowed shooters to shoot for fun afterwards. it was half way through the afternoon and I didn't find any 'partners' to shoot with so I decided to do a 'shoot and run' through one of the course. half way through I caught up with a guy doing a scoring round by himself so I shot with him. he had trouble understanding why I didn't have a score card, couldn't understand 'shooting for fun'. I thought his brain was going to overheat spilling out 'rules and regulations' to me as we were making our round. THEN we caught up with a group of about 10 folks, mixture of granddads, grandmoms, uncles, aunts dads, moms and kids. this group lined up and emptied their quivers at the targets. I thought this guy was going to have a stroke. it was all I could do to keep from laughing at him.

A fellow in our trad group told us a story this past weekend's 3d shoot.

He was at a 3d shoot in Maine several years ago. One shooting station had three deer targets set up at different distances, but there was only one "station/target marker" on that target ,( ie you are shooting at Target "#12" stake). Sometimes, different 3d club's will set out two target ID stakes ( ie #11 and #12) on the same target area and have two targets at different distances. Never three-or at least, not yet.

At the stake, prepping to shoot first, he says, "which one am I supposed to shoot at?? There aren't any specific instructions for this one.".

Another guy in the group answers him. " Just call your shot. Tell us which one you are going for, and we'll call it "good" and all shoot at it."

The shooter raises his voice and announces,"I am going for the one on the far right."

At that moment, the middle and far right side "target" run away.

I don't know how TRUE it was, but some of the other guys in our group knew him, and believed it. I got a chuckle out of it, and of course glad he made his loud target identifying announcement before shooting.

i didnt see it but some buddies did. At the 1st ATAR shoot at a ski resort we set a mean looking wild boar target.we flagged of the area to keep the public off the range but a jogger ignored the ribbons and ducked under the ribbon and rose up nose to nose with the wild boar. They said it scared the crap out of him.

Four + years ago, when I stared trad shooting/3d, I took my 2 year old brittany spaniel "Daisy" to the local 3d course for some exercise while I was practicing (yes, she was on a leash, and I was the only one on the course).

She was very interested in the targets. Curious about the deer targets, sniffing and staring at them. Very growl-ly and stand-off- ish at the bear targets-particularly the standing black bear. Funny to see.

She doesn't do that anymore, as she's used to them now. She's more interested in the live squirrels running around the course.

I was not the first post. I read about ten before mine and none too bad. Wonder why they are all gone.

I decided to do a 3D at our club. There was some snow on the ground, it was cold wet, and drizzly. No one else in our group wanted to go, but one guy said ok, he'd go if I would. We got 3/4's of he way thru, and the next shot was on the other side of the creek, which was running kind of high, about 2-3 ft deep. There was a bridge a little ways down and I suggested that if my friend had a hair, he'd cross over the creek right where we were b/c someone had put a couple of 4x4's across as a short cut. My friend who is in pretty good shape accepted my challenge and carefully crossed over. Well, I was feeling pretty cocky and got halfway over and my friend said "you better be careful, 'cause your heavier than me"...well I started jumping up and down on the makeshift bridge, to show him he was wrong, and the little bridge was fine...as you can guess, one of the 4x4's broke, and into the drink I went, me, my quiver, and my bow. I was soaked and it was cold. He warned me that if we didn't go in and forget finishing the shoot I'd probably get sick. That's all he had to say, I'd show him. I did finish the shoot, and I didn't get sick, and we both had a good laugh about me going into icy cold water, after jumping up and down on the bridge and shooting off my big mouth. I suffered a little but I had to show him I could finish the shoot being wet and cold.

I may have told this here before. One of the regulars at 3D liked to shoot away from the stakes, with everyone putting up $1.00, best shot takes the pot. One day, while walking to the next target, he spied something white on the trail ahead. He got the bet up, and he made the best shot by far. When we walked up, the white thing was a very loaded diaper. I think his arrow is still there.

At one event there were two rabbit targets close together. The idea was to shoot an arrow at each. In the group ahead of us were a father and young son. The boy shot his first arrow and made a good hit. His father asked if that was the one he was aiming at.

The boy turned and said, his voice dripping with scorn 'Daa-ad, if I hit something, that is what I was aiming at.'

I have adopted that attitude myself. - lbg

Was at the Buckhorn Rendezvous years back, it snowed that morning and trees were hanging all over the lanes. A friend who shall remain nameless decided to step to the side of the lane and try a shot. There was one very skinny little sapling in the way. Yup, he centered it. "I want another shot at that." Okay. He centered it again, an inch below his first shot.

We were cold and wet and laughing for the rest of the day ;-)
