Pappy is sponsoring the IBO at Twin Oaks this year. AW bows , Calvin and Dwaine and Twin Oaks are putting up $1000 dollars for a selfbow compition called the hunters challenge. We are doing this to support selfbows . There is nothing like seeing a face of a glass bow archer when a guy with a selfbow puts his arrow in the middle of that 10 ring. All of a sudden there is new respect for those slow clunky bows. We know different but most people don't know. So come and compete , share stories , bow knowledge and meet likeminded folks. It's going to be a blast. This is in July and more info . to come. Arvin

Sounds like a good deal. I like to see such support for selfbows... cuz I like slow and clunky I guess :^)

Where is this event? What are the criteria by which the bows will be judged?

From: Big Dog
Date: 24-May-17

Jeff, you and your self bow are judged by how many times you can put an arrow in the 10 ring. :o) It is a shooting simply a shooting contest for self bows. Regards

From: Big Dog
Date: 24-May-17

Sorry for the typo. It is simply a shooting contest. The top shots from the Hunter course meet in a shoot down style competition Sat. evening. And....if you want to be in it...you better hit the 10 ring a lot. :o) Regards

It is July 21/22/23 2017 at TwinOaks Bowhunters Range @ /1079 Ashley road Chapmansboro,TN.37035, between Nashville and Clarksville,TN. off I24W. It is a true self bow class, no backing except snake skin, nothing on the back that will enhance performance or durability. Thanks Arvin. Pappy

I used to shoot self bow with some of the best,,back in the day,, quite a few of us showed up at most shoots,,

Topsy Mike Prince Dave Turner James Chad Tom Gil etc,,, I will miss shooting with you guys, I know its gonna be a great shoot,,:)

I know there were a bunch more great self bow guys, my memory fails me, if you remember any,, remind me,,

From: Pappy
Date: 02-Jun-17

Brad most of them guys we don't see much anymore, Topsy I see now and then but I think Mike has quit shooting al together, we have a lot of new and up coming ones though, that are trying to fill there shoes. I shot with Topsy about 3 years back at the HH shoot and he is still a very good shot. Pappy

great to hear bout Topsy,, when I got to Tenn late 80's, ,Topsy was so nice to me,, I could not hit the broad side of a barn,, he set up most the shoots I went to,,at the Franklin archery range,, man he set up some long hard shots back then anyway, ,he coached me and coached me ,, make a long story short,, I was tied with David Turner in Tenn state Championship,,for third,, Topsy always told me shoot first if I win the flip of the coin,, Topsy put a red dot on a target bout 30 yards I won the coin toss, and beat David by bout an inch,, Topsy was so proud for me,, what a great guy,,, hope you guys have a great shoot, I will try to make it next year,,:)

I think the selfbows are going to be well represented this year.. it's always good to have asome quality shooters shooting selfbows. Unfortunately I am not one of them. :) oh well . Arvin

From: MedicineMan

I've shot with you Arvin! You can put a string of 10's together just as good as anyone I've seen!

Cant wait to get back to Twin Oaks

Ya Arvin is talking his self down, but I have also seen him shoot. Back up for the weekend. Pappy

"I've shot with you Arvin! You can put a string of 10's together just as good as anyone I've seen!" I wonder if that is pre-beer or post-beer?

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 17-Jun-17

Anyone with a sense of history should know that self bows can compete with any bow material. Erwin Pletcher won three National titles in the 1940's shooting a yew self bow, and set records that weren't beaten until the mid 1950's....and that was on the long, unmarked field courses. I expect the guys will fare pretty well down there this year, and will be an eye opener for those who are clueless about the self bow genre.

From: Pappy
Date: 19-Jun-17

Agree George, From what I have seen over the years the scores are usually a little less in selfbow than in Long/Recurve and RU but not much and in the hands of a good shooter they can hang right in there. Pappy

From: danceswithleaves
Date: 19-Jun-17

George, you really do need to come down this year to Twin Oaks, this is the place that just feels like home ! You will love it !!Cal

From: Arvin
Date: 20-Jun-17

Ok rarely I put a string of 10s together. Unfortunately when I do they are followed by 4 zeros. :) To me its like golf . The best score you ever shot is the one you want to beat . And so on it goes. Arvin

Well I think the Selfbows are going to be represented pretty good. There could be 4-6 IBO current world champions competing for that selfbow buckle. Just saying. :). Arvin

From: Bob Rowlands
Date: 24-Jun-17

I like selfbows and always have. Especially those with no shelf. I could care less about arrow speed to tell the truth. At short range even the super heavies I make get there plenty fast. I doubt they are going 140 fps. Sloooooowww is fine with me. If I shot long range I'd have a different opinion though.

Winners of the IBO World self bow, great shooting. I will try and get some pictures up of the Hunter Challenge shoot off, 12 very good shooters were in that on Saturday night and they really know how to shoot them sticks. We had 29 total register in the self bow Class for the Hunter Challenge course. Thanks to all that came. Pappy

What kind of range distance do you shoot with the selfbow. Mine is slow that I'm using this year to try out. I don't shoot it over 20 yards but out to that it's great. I quit shooting 3D because the shots are to long for my selfbow.

From: badger
Date: 26-Jul-17

greyrider, your selfbow doesn't have to be slow. Plenty of help right here on the leatherwall if you ever decide you want to build one a little faster.

From: Pappy
Date: 27-Jul-17

Max 25 yards Dennis, most shots 15 to 22 or so. Pappy

From: DanaC
Date: 27-Jul-17

A lot of older recurves are plenty slow. Speed isn't the same as long(er) range accuracy. That comes from better form and adjustment.

I always try to stretch my range a bit when practicing. Easy to stay in the 'comfort zone', but that doesn't help improve.

From: Pappy
Date: 27-Jul-17

I agree DanaC, we try to set or ranges so everyone can have fun and at reasonable hunting ranges, I know some shoot longer than that, even hunting but 25 yard and in for me is reasonable for shooting at live animals so that is how we like to set our courses. In a tournament situation the cream will come to the top close or long and as I told some this passed weekend , if you are going to win the Traditional World you should be able to hit close also, some of the top shooters have trouble with that.
