I use acrylic craft paint myself.

The thing to do with any finishes are to try tests. Of course getting recommendations will save you useless experiments, but there can still be oddities in your process. Give the materials a try on a sample and see for yourself. If tape won't rip the finish off, it is probably good.

Bowlim is absolutely right. That is the best way.

Both the min wax water based and oil based are pretty fast drying. Which one are you planning to use?

wow...what a timely topic...guess I'll be headed back to homey depot today to return the "For Interior Use Only" miniwax fast drying wipe on poly I bought yesterday (with latex gloves and cheesecloth) that I didn't have my readers with me to see and read the fine print.

so screw it...I'm resorting to my tried and true Watco Danish Oil for my Forrester Tapered Mahoganies.

Trying to get'em prepped for the new JD Berry ASL I have coming in tomorrow! :)

I use the acrylic craft paint from Wally world too. Mix the colors I need to create the color wanted to match the bow colors, then apply. Let it cure at least over night before applying finish.

I have those Acrylic Testors paints that I used. Then applied MinWax waterbased polycrillic. I brushed on with foam brush two coats to protect cap/cresting. I read here that the waterbased has a tendency to stick in targets. Figures, I dipped 8 cedars full length in the stuff. Now will have to wax the snot out of them. Next Cedars I will still do cap/crest as above but rest of shaft I am going back to Pure Tung Oil. It's slower to use but it doesn't stick in targets and I can reapply when it wears on point end. And if it is important to you it is Enivorment safe like Shellac.

wb poly does NOT adhere to white rattle can cap color. It peels right off ime.

X2 do tests and not just one.

As 20+ years renovation contractor, I ran into a few incompatibility issues even though I had done perfunctory tests. Of course, you cannot imitate the effects of time with a few tests.
