Sadly....my 50's Herters just blew up. I was going to shoot it this weekend in Recurve class at the TN classic. I heard some ticking from the lower limb and hurried in to unstrung it. It gave way just before I got the string off.
EVERYONE KNOWS NOT TO PUT YOUR FACE OVER THE LIMBS WHEN UNSTRINGING RIGHT??
Anyway, the glass held it together nicely when it snapped. I'll hang it on the wall.....
Will be shooting an ILF this weekend :)

Since Fred introduced uni directional glass to bowmaking it's all most used. But unidirectional glass has no lateral durability where mat has cross fibers to give that. But they all figure a bows limbs don't need lateral strength and it was added weight to limbs that did nothing for performance. BW is the only ones I know of that has used it since and that's just a very thin layer in the middle of their limb lamps to reinforce them for ff when it came out.

Was that a birdseye maple model? Some of those had issues with that wood for some reason. I bought one once that was starting to delaminate at the fades. I only paid $15.00 for it at the time so just ate that loss. Tri-State Archery used it over a good number of years, well after unidirectional came out.

Yep...maple. It didn't break all the way thorough....just a laminate at the lower fade. This bow never felt balanced so I'm not totally surprised. It was EXTREMELY quiet though.

Sounds familiar...here's a FASCO made from braided glass that gave up the ghost in the same way. I heard a click when I drew a couple of times and I inspected the bow and found this.

I had noticed the spots on the limb the month before (see picture) but thought it was just the finish...i shot over a 100 arrows before it got bad like above.
I gave it to a guy at the range for decoration.

Too bad as it was a beautiful bow...Fred Anderson said that the braided glass will fail from the fibres abrading against one another.
Root and Tri-State seemed to get it right as their braided glass hangs in.
The FASCO could have been dry-fired before I got it...who knows.
Had a B-50 on it so not the dreaded fast flight! ;>)
