I've always thought those were beautiful bows--too pretty hunt with. Does anyone here use them for hunting?

Hardly ever see these for sale.

Does it have to be a P2 to be a member? Here's a Mint I got a few years ago.

I've got P-II limbs on my Carroll's Gentleman Jim riser, so I guess I have the working parts of one.

I am the lucky owner of both a Presentation I and II and I love the way they shoot (something about the grip is perfect.)

I do 3D rounds with them regularly and although I am as accurate with them as with any other how I've owned I can't say I would take either hunting.

Too nice to beat them up- and from what I gather from this thread now... too rare!

I have a P-1 Outlaw and a P-2. both are 37# and neither is for sale.

You're right, these P-2 bows don't come often. I had been looking for one for years before I scored one on ebay in the gun parts section.

From: DanaC
Date: 11-Apr-17

Never seen a P2 'live', only pix. There's a lady from central Mass. who shoots a beautiful P1, one of these days I'll ask to try it.

Those old target bows are as much art as function. Don't currently have one in the stable, but ya never know what will turn up.

Have owned White Wing and a Howatt Catalina. Those old long 'curves are just sweet.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 11-Apr-17

I basically grew up in archery looking at the Wing bows. The P- II was one of the first, along with Grable/Root Golden Eagle in the late 60's. There were probably half a dozen or more in our archery club. There's likely a lot of them out there yet. As the old guard gets older still, the bows take up space in closets, or basements...most of those came with their own case too. Just keep your eyes open, they show up more than you think on Ebay....particularly after they are discussed here on the Leatherwall. Coincidence? I don't think so. I'll be watching. By the way, the Carroll's takedown limbs are interchangeable with the P-II, which leads me to believe that Bob Lee made Carroll's limbs. Not a whole lot of curved base recurve limbs for t/d's back then.

From: Backcountry
Date: 11-Apr-17

Don't ever see any Carrolls, either. I wonder what became of all those? Weren't they were pretty common back in the '70's?

From: bfisherman11 Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 11-Apr-17

I had a Micarta P2 but sold it to fund another bow purchase. It was very nice looking and shot pretty good. It was a light weight draw and my arrows were a tad stiff. Did not keep it long enough to sort out the arrow thing. Part of why I got rid of it was the stabilizer hole in the lower grip part was to high up and my finger rested on it. Not sure if that was just mine or if others were like that. I just could not get used to that. I do think they are amazing looking bows though.

Carroll's were made in Moab, Utah, as I remember it. When I lived in Colorado in the 90s, I picked up a number of them. Because I shot a heavy bow, there was a much greater chance of finding Carroll's limbs the weight I wanted. Real good shooters, although I never fell in love with their metal handles. On a P2, great!

I'm in the club!!!! with the original t/d case!!!

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Scotty Robertson has two of them, and I believe Dennis Miller has one or two, and I have a Gentleman Jim riser...16" for the hunter model. They show up now and again, and I actually like the metal riser.

From: Shaftcaster
Date: 11-Apr-17

I agree with all the above comments AND have been lucky enough to have owned both Pll and P3 bows at different stages. It was the grip and the feel of those 68" limbs unfolding that did it for me, good memories of a classic bow.

As both bows are now gone I mention here that I still have some Pll limbs RH 36# available [cheaply] to anyone who could use them. Please forward any correspondence through LW if wishing to discuss this further. >>>----Shaftcaster------>

Count me in too! I got a Wing P2, it's an AMF, guessing made mid 70's. It's got the long riser and 50 lb limbs making a 62" bow. I agree with bfisherman11 about the placement of the stabilizer bushing in the riser.

They are nice and highly underrated. Here are a few.

When the PII first came out, a local merchant lost an eye stinging one of them. It was being demonstrated by a Wing rep, name of Jim Palmer. Jim "Skip" Palmer was a PAA president and can be seen in the Archery Hall of Fame, along with Bob Rhode, the first two recipients of the Karl E Palmatier award. bvd

Biathlete-- Don't wait too long or you may never get the chance to join the exclusive Presentation owner's club.

I heard something similar from an acquaintance who said his dad had a couple of Wing Thunderbirds. Now I can't find the guy. Frustrating.

From: wingman
Date: 12-Apr-17

I also have Wing PIIs. The short and long handles in rosewood and black phenolic. I have a Carroll's Gentleman Jim handle with three sets of limbs and three sets of Wing limbs. They are interchangeable. IT is my favorite setup with any of the limbs and just fits me great--the grip.

Back around 1980, I talked to a Wing head bowyer--Buddy Stamper, whose Tel # I got from Judd Cooney (another name from the past who shot PIIs). Buddy explained that they (Wing) built the limbs for the Carroll Gentleman Jim recurves as Carroll could not keep up with the demand but could keep up producing the metal handles. He said they would fit on the PIIs handles and Wing limbs on the Carroll handle. They had to make the limbs look different so as not to be confused with Wing limbs and hence the limb tip was different. Very nice man and a pleasure to talk to and get some history. At the time, I had one PII and a Carroll Gentleman Jim. Also, talked to him about the Wing Slide Lock Competition II of which I had back then two handles and four sets of limbs.

Good info--very interesting look back.

My question for those who used to have those bows... What do you shoot now?

I saw one walking through a 3D shoot years ago, and even at a distance, I immediately knew what I was looking at. Beautiful bows.

I meant, what bow could possibly cause a person to put down his Wings in favor of something else... Is it the "wandering eye" syndrome?

I absolutely love the feel of Wing single piece bows from the 60s - Silver Wing and Swift Wing.

Maybe I'm missing something or maybe I'm just too new to the sport, but I don't quite get the attraction of takedown bows.

They're pretty...but how do they perform?

Someone posted that his shot "pretty good" but then traded or sold it. That's not exactly a ringing endorsement. I'm wondering, since these share a pedigree that include vaunted Red Wing Hunters and Thunderbirds.

From: papabear
Date: 13-Apr-17

You know there really isn't a stock answer to that. One guy will shoot great with one the next will say they suck. It's all individual you gotta try 'um yourself to see how it preforms with your style .

"How do they perform?" Well how do you want it quantified? By fps? By customer satisfaction? By looks? I see a lot more Black Widows, Blacktails, and yes...even Borders on the classified more than I do Presentation II. So one guy, who didn't like one...or at least you think he didn't, sold it in the classifieds. Yep, must be junk.

The ones I remember were shooting a lot of high scores in the winter league. I also remember they were doing okay in the hunting arena as well. Bob Lee was, and is known for precision bows, from entry level to his top models.

From: Backcountry
Date: 28-Apr-17

I go strictly by looks, myself. Take those Widder bows for instance--plumb uglee if you ask me. I'll take a Presentation II any day.

From: jk
Date: 28-Apr-17

wingman/Tim said "Back around 1980, I talked to a Wing head bowyer--Buddy Stamper.."

Buddy made equally beautiful bows on his own (and probably faster)...21st Century longbows.

In addition to my numerous Wing PIIs... I own two Carroll's bows with original Carroll's limbs. A "Gentleman Jim" Hunter model and a "target Model". The Hunter Model is shorter with black magnesium riser and limbs (no overlays on the tips-- just plain) The Target Model is 66 inches long, beautiful white limbs with nice overlays. Both considered fine bows in their day... Shoot Straight, rare breed
