Okay so I posted some pictures of my first attempt at a hickory selfbow and got some good feedback from you guys, so here is the up date! This is a picture of it with a huge amount of set before I heated and tweaked the limbs:

Here she is after I applied some backset with a heat gun;

Then remove a little propeller twist:

And here is where I'm at now, I need to throw it back on the tiller tree and bring the tiller and poundage back to where I want it. What do you guys think?

TBOZ, you have been busy. :)

Brace looks pretty good.

It looks good. One piece of advice though. Set isn't as big a deal as you think. It doesn't look like from the picture there was a huge amount of set. The heating MIGHT remove the set permanently after you string it and shoot it, and it may not. But either way, shoot it and enjoy it.

Guys pay money to buy "string follow" longbows you know.

Thanks FDP, good to know! I'd never even shot a selfbow before and coming non- stringfollow longbows it just seemed like a lot LOL. Good point though!

You'll have a blast with that bow. And probably be spoiled.

Looks great.! Advanced Technics..!Go slow on finish tiller and sanding and you will have a great bow.!! Hickory always take some string follow , don't let it bother you, they shoot great.!

WAY TO GO. I have only made firewood for all my self bows attempts. That and one kids bow. Congratulations.

Looking good Tye.

Bones, not to worry at least we have the best looking firewood

That's a heck of a first bow buddy! Nice job! As fdp said, that's not a huge amount of set for your first hickory at all. I find that it takes an exceptional piece of very dry hickory to keep string follow down. Even if set returns to your bow, you've no doubt learned a ton.

Fine bow for first. Keep it up. Arvin

Thanks guys! I just ordered a draw knife yesterday and I'm looking forward to starting another one after I get this one finished! I need to find some Osage staves to work with in the future now.

Tye, you are in Ohio. I built literally dozens of bows when I lived there out of Maple. Maple makes an EXCELLENT flatbow. You should have some Osage around as well though. Don't overlook Elm either. Elm makes a dandy bow.
