I will be bow hunting on my families farm land here in Iowa this year, and it will officially be the 175th year the land has belonged to our family. Originally homesteaded in 1842.

That is outstanding. I was born in Iowa, oddly enough. St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. May not exist anymore since that was 1970.

What do you get to hunt out there? I recall my parents saying not much around where they lived but corn and pigs.

Hunting is traditional. Owning land is traditional. So I'm not sure what you are really asking. 8^).

That's pretty impressive for Iowa which became a state in 1846. Nice to see an original homestead still in family hands. There are a few of those back here as well. Ours has only been in our family for about a hundred years.

Bobby B, St Lukes is still there, and we do have a lot of corn and pigs. And when you have a lot of corn you have alot of deer. I hunt public mostly in southern Iowa and can only imagine what it would be like to have your own land, it would be great to be able to leave your tree stands up and your turkey blinds in place.

Yes indeed and Congrats to your entire family and all predecessors who hung in there and fought the good fight! :)

JusPassin, pretty neat. Being of Greek ancestry I can only go back to my great grandfather who came to the US around 1914 with my grandparents. Jawge

No family land here. My ancestors were just poor Italian immigrants who came to this county and barely survived. They came too late for the Homestead act and too early to come across the southern border. I had to work for and pay for every acre I own and it's not much. So I guess I'm not as traditional as most.

WOW! That is truly amazing. The average family nowadays moves every seven years.
