Don't much like the Bear inserts either. I picked up a set recently that had a pretty good size flange on them. Unfortunately, I don't remember who made them. Martin, I think.
Black widow makes a good insert, but it's not 1/4-inch. Nice thing about theirs is the inserts are enclosed at the end so they can't be pulled out by a screw that's too long.
I've seen so many ruined risers, either because the inserts are countersunk or the screws used are too long. When they're countersunk, any heavy turning of the screw will pull them to flush with the riser surface. From there, they work their way loose, usually taking some wood with them. That's why flanged inserts are a plus. They ride on the surface of the riser and the mounting bracket is mounted to them.
Unfortunately, they can still be pulled out (pushed out actually) with screws that are too long. When the overly long screws bottom out, they pull the insert out of the riser, again usually taking wood along with them.
I believe I got my latest set of inserts from the Footed Shaft. Check them out. Good luck.

Binghams Projects has a 1/4 x 20 insert that is threaded and has a small flange. They aren't perfect but, the best I know of. Should you find a good source let us know.

Predator bows, Huntger's Niche, has the kind of 1/4-inch flanged inserts I think are the best. They're not listed for sale, but maybe he would sell you a set or two.

Kustom king has these, look better than the barbed Bear inserts, or as Orion suggests Hunters Niche uses a quality insert, if they sold them I would pick up a few pairs.

You want an insert that the bottom flares as the screw goes in. Not a barbed or coarse threaded one. Martin used to have some really nice ones that are 10-24. This doesn't look like a good one but it shows what I am talking about.

If you were willing to drill all the way through the riser you could use these - bomb proof

Daniel, ACE hardware sells 1/4-20 brass wood inserts. I recently added 24 8-32 steel wood inserts to my Fender P bass neck and body. The inserts ACE sells are full threaded, much better than the knife edge style. Check them out, they're in those box racks in the nut and bolt section, marked brass wood inserts, in case the help doesn't know squat about what they sell. lol
If you opt for those, do 'not' install the insert with the slot facing out, and use a screwdriver in the slot! Face the slot in, that's a cutting edge, not a screwdriver slot. Seat the insert with a 1/4-20 machine screw that has two nuts tightened against each other. Seat the insert flush, then loosen the jam nuts. Voila! Perfect.
Also be aware to put a small chamfer on the hole in the bow before the new insert is installed, or you'll chip the finish.
