I live in North Eastern Minnesota and my brother and I are throwing around the idea of heading west this fall to chase mule deer. He's hunted speed goats in the area around Buffalo and thinks that would be a good area to start looking at. Anybody on here willing to point us in a general direction? Or should we just go a bit farther west into Montana or Wyoming?

You're probably going to have to draw permits in MT or WY.

MD populations are down everywhere.

Utah? We got hammered this winter Northern Mountains BOOM! Not inches of Snow but Feet. Central Mountains BOOM! Lots a Snow out Utahs Way.. Now The Hard part. Try and draw a tag. Resident here 71 years, Haven't been able to draw a General Season Archery Tag the last 2 years. Which is CRAP!!

well what do I know,,, I hunt solo, last year again for the 2nd year west of river, no where near buffalo, send me a PM, I will tell you what I saw,,,,, came home with a doe last year, saw a ton of bucks,,,,,,,, I had a great time,,,,,

going back this year, last week of Sept and first week of Oct

but otherwise, forget SD,no deer,,,, in my opinion, some non resident hunters, are a lot better or will work harder than resident hunters out there, but everyone I met except for one ahole, are pretty nice.......

It is not a close distance game though,, and you need to be mobile

How about Nebraska??

If you have time, as in more then 2 weeks then SD can be very good as well as Nebraska. Nebraska would be my choice, as far as trophies well that is in the eye of the beholder. A 125" plus Mulie is very doable in either state but hunting public I would say you need 14-15 days of actual hunting time so say 3 weeks total. Shawn

I'm definitely no trophy hunter, i like eating meat. First good animal that offers me a great shot, I'm taking that shot! Living on the very tip of lake Superior we didn't have a horrible winter compared to the last few so I didn't think it was much worse to the west. If we went it'd be a complete DIY, camping trip (which is only allowed on BLM lands in SoDak if I'm not mistaken?). We may make a go of it even as a scouting trip for the future. Sitting in a tree around here between day after opener and when the leaves drop isn't real exciting anyways...
