Anybody on here make your own trad clothing. I love the pre-1840s period. I just finished these Buffalo hide leggings to wear with my clouts and kilts. Making a full set of pants and shirt now for a hunting buddy. Anyone else make their own clothing?

Nope I dont have that kind of time.

I'll be watching this one....

I've tanned the hide of almost every deer I've ever shot and I have a couple that I tanned up when a hunting partner didn't want it... So I have quite a little stack sitting around waiting to be put to use.....

Took me two months to make a broom handle in 9th grade wood shop. It was then I knew that my calling wasn't in making things. Nice talent to have. You did well Mr. Shon.

"Nope I dont have that kind of time."

No, but we have time to bang keys on the internet and watch TV! LOL.....

At least these "crafty" projects can be done indoors/after dark....

I did a whole outfit out of 6 deer hides I had killed but I did it in 1980. Sewed capotes for all family members. Built flintlock rifles. Not into that anymore.

A young gal that shoots in my group with the San Diego Archers, made everything you can see in the picture, except the boots and bow. This was our annual King Arthur Tournament this past year.

Nice work Shon. I make quivers and bags. Never tried clothes.

George Hope you didn't end up with a plunger handle instead of a broomstick..lol

That outfit won't look right until it gets all sweatstained and the knees and thighs get grease stained and dirty. Clean some chili bowls on your knees.

Here is the first fur item of handmade clothes I ever made. I got tired of selling possums for a dollar. So I tanned a couple and sewed them on my Air Force issued article mittens. Then I took a couple scraps of raccoon and finished them. I would always wear these on my atv and the wind would go right through the canvass part. Now with that thin possum they are super warm. In fact on a 20 degree sharp cold morning in the bow stand, I just stick a hand warmer down each one and hang them over my neck. Then all I wear is a very lightweight pair of fingerless wool in them.

Not into period clothes, but I do like BP muzzleloading. 'Muzzleloader' mags, 'The Book of Buckskinning' series 1-6 from the 80s to early 90s had chapters on clothes and shooting purses from that era to about 1850 that were very detailed. I have 5 of the books in that series. There's a chance your local library might have those in stock. However, nowadays everything is downloadable and printable online.

Don't know but since I don't have access to buck skins I may have a crack at doing some clothes making with kangaroo skins and do som trimming with fox furs. Not a lot of difference to making my quiver. Just need to remove the kangaroo fur from the skins. This lacing technique I think would work.My quiver is 25 years old OSR

From: Longspurwv
Date: 06-Mar-17

Red beast master, I guess I was trying to give the haggard chased by Indians Jeremiah Johnson look!! I caught a lot heck about it next time I will have to smile.

From: Red Beastmaster
Date: 06-Mar-17

I thought maybe there was a kink in the breach cloth. LOL

From: Blackhawk
Date: 06-Mar-17

A real mountain man had few reasons to smile, right longspurwv? Enduring all kinds of weather, getting chased by wild animals and Indians, hunger, thirst, loneliness are not happy thoughts.

Now if he had some whiskey and a husky female, then that might put a smile on his face.

I think you look just right...:)

From: Cedarsavage

Very cool work guys. I have plans for some beaver mittens in the near future, but I'm not talented enough to take on the projects that some of you have

From: Longspurwv

Blackhawk, it was a hard life! You are correct. Other than rendezvous time I doubt there was a lot of smiling time!

Shon, Them's nice looking duds, good work. If I were to wear that here I'd be dead meat tho. We got coyote hunters, coon hunters, fox hunters, anythigthatmoves hunters that sound shoot at grunting deer for crinoutloud. Couldn't wear them rags 'cept to a ronnyvoo...but they sure look nice on YOU!

Good thread Longspurwv. I enjoy looking at all this talent on here. On Thursday nights a group of us get together to make selfbows but it has developed into making other hunting things including flintlocks. A few of the guys are into re-enactments and they make all their own everything including long guns.

My mind is constantly working and when I see something I think, what can that be used for in a traditional style. Well at a thrift shop the other day I picked up two fleece blankets or table cloths, tag said sold by the Shoshone nation made in China. I liked them and brought em home and am going to make bow field covers out of them. Here's one I finished for my bow.

Just wish these would have been wool but they will keep my bows from getting scratched.
