I used to go biking on these snowmobile trails, and it was amazing the bucks I would roll up on, unfortunately they closed that area down. If you are moving fast and quiet the Bucks don't know what hit them. Not a hunting tactic, but you do get a sense of what is in the general area.

Riser and limbs go in one pannier, and the quiver of arrows in the other. Takes just a few minutes to assemble in the woods. I usually ride the old railroad bed back to a good spot, or take it to the State Park snowmobile roads where hunting is allowed.

Ya know the bike ain't a bad idea.I generally walk up to 60 kilometres at times hunting on foot in one day and it's real hard on ones body.At 57 a bike may make it easier to get around.I Unfortunatly hunt semi desert country so a sandy surface may make it difficult.I also think I would probably spook more feral pigs than I could spot and stalk on foot.If I can get me a good light mountain bike it may be worth a try.I have seen folks on trail bikes and quads get around but they loose more game than they shoot I generally can shoot more than folk on motorbikes or Quad bikes can.Ya got to be silent but deadly. Thanks for the idea though. Biking offtrail to very remote locations for many years (20?) almost daily now. Finally snapped a Trek Bontager in 2! Just installed a simple rack from walmart to the seatpost on my latest 29". Have panniers exactly as Ron & George. Suggest you have means to fasten these panniers to the frame so they wont flop into the spokes. Stand bow & bq upright & secure to the seatpost w/long shoestring so you have both hands on handlebars for max leverage.

Agree on the panniers. Mine were also made by Cannondale and have an elastic cord with a hook to hook on lower frame.
Bigdog, that's just a fat tire recumbent, not just for old folks. I saw recumbent cycles back in 1988 when I was riding in a cross country bicycle trek.
Those fat tires weight about two pounds more each than my 2.25's and that has to be pedaled. I can still ride mine at age 71, even with a few hills...which we have plenty of here. I'm not into the 10% grades anymore though...been there and done that.

My Cannondale (actually 2 of them) are from 86 and 89 so they are getting some age to them. The Mtn Bike has Shimano Deore components and has been pretty much worry free since I bought it about 30 years ago. My road bike has Suntour components...both are still factory save for the Ritchie wheels on the mountain bike.

The bike trailer is a Bob Yak trailer that I purchased from REI. The trailer specs say it can carry up to 70 lbs. I maybe had 40+ lbs in it. This was the first time I actually used the trailer and it worked well and pulled nicely. I was hoping to test the weight limits with some Elk parts - maybe next year. I might also try to match my bike and bow colors a little closer next year too. :)

Obliged Dana. 70# limit wont do. Shore up the frame incl heavier mono wheel to get 300# min for transporting game meat & it gets plenty useful. Trailer tilt & balance are critical. Ive fabricated a great bike trailer (2-wheel) & believe sgl wheel could be much advantaged?
Nice bow/bike Frisky. Offtrail might opt earthtones? Is that California Camo?

Rode my mountain bike 8 miles into the Deschutes R. trail from the mouth at the confluence with the Columbia one time. There are a lot of burr thistles on the old RR bed to stick in the tires. I got all the way back there, and went hunting up the side hill. Came back a few hours later to a flat tire. Pumped it up and started riding back. Made it a few hundred yards before it went soft again. Pumped it again...and again...and again. I don't know how many times I did that until I finally made it out well after dark. What fun...! Didn't kill any chukars either.

Monkeyball, I honestly do not remember what bike it was but it was a pretty cheap one and I sold it soon after my hunt.
Straitera, All the Goat meat is in the trailer along with some other gear, Hide and head are on my buddies bike, backpack has camp in it. tube on bike frame has my extra arrows.
We went in the day before the hunt and found 19 Goats that evening. Wind kicked up and neither of us think we slept at all that night but probably did get some sleep. Sky was pretty clear when I got up opening morning with some clouds below us in the valley and Elk bugling below us also. By the time we started hiking the wind was worse and we were socked in with freezing mist.
Started hiking up to were most of the Goats were the evening before and had to take shelter in the rocks to get out of the wind and mist. Everything was covered with frozen mist and w3e did not know exactly where we were in relation to where I wanted to be. As it turned out our second stop was right were I was headed for, which we figured out once thing clear a little. While waiting it out my buddies hat was blown off his head and it took us a while to find it.
Finally it cleared enough that we spotted 2 Goats below us but they were not visable for long before dropping out of sight. We search everywhere for the bigger group but could not find them so we headed down to get a better look at the 2 we had seen earlier. When we finally found them it was a Billy and Collared Nanny. Getting into some rocks for cover the sky was partly clearing and some of the frozen mist was thawing which allowed the wind to peel it off the rock and drive it into us like little missiles.
I told my buddy that I was not sure I could shoot unless I was standing on top of the Goat do to the wind. So we watched them for a couple of hours until I finally thought I could get in close and hope the wind died down when I got there. Slipping in close coming from behind the Billy he had no clue I was there until he looked when I got to about 10 yards. At which time the wind quit for a couple of seconds and I was able to shoot him. He made it about 60 yards before going down and my buddy watch the whole thing from up above.
This was the second Goat he watched me shoot as he had been with me 19 years earlier when I shot my first one in this same unit. This is probably my last Goat hunt as I am not sure if I can climb these mountains again if it take me another 20 years to draw again. If so it was a good hunt to end it on with a really good friend.
Weather on this hunt was horrible with high winds and freezing mist early in the day and wind all day. Wind actually stopped us dead on way downhill when we hit it head on, then pushed us uphill when it was behind us. Crosswind hit me a few time and almost blew me over a cliff on one occasion, we were happy to get out of it.

Craig, yeah, the bull thistles are in some places out west too, no doubt brought in on someones boots. These star thistles grow in dry climates and are tough on tires and sneakered and dogs feet. Ive seen horses eat bull thistles but not star thistles. Buddy yeah slime does work in those cases. I have some slime tubes. There is cactus there, too. Lots of pricker type stuff to menace your feet and bike tires. Thats quite impressive goat hunting you guys did on your bikes too btw.

Good story comrade. Thanks.
My 2-wheel homemade cart was stolen along with my climber from public woods. Got the climber back. Want another monowheel cart w/generous wt load. Yours may be it?
Meanwhile, i drape loads across the seat & bars & walk out.
Cal, my limited Slime experience is good. Seen wheels near completely Slime full never go flat in mesquite country. Pretty severe environment where flat tractor tires are common. Never loaded a wheel myself. What do you think about the effectiveness & extra weight especially in mtns?
