Had a couple of deer walk past me today heading for the food plot. Button buck twins. Good to have them close here at the end of the year. They made me smile.

Food plots turned out nice this year, despite the raging drought we had in lower Alabama.

I've never shot a button buck, so they always get a pass from me. Nice patch of green there my friend, and nice photo.

We're not 100% in line with this gave them a pass excuse. That said, I shot a button buck back in 2009. I thought it was a yearling doe until I was field dressing it, lol!

I shot a "doe" one time that had 2 inch spikes when I got to it.
More like a "D'oh!"
My first deer ever turned out to be a buttonā¦ Although, in my defenseā¦ He did dress out at 90 pounds. But I haven't shot one since. No real reason not to; just a choice.
Some days it's just as much fun to watch them walk.

What does the food plot consist of? Looks like an enjoyable sit for you.

I also would like to know what you use for food plots. We have lots or deer down on the farm [about 3 miles from LBL] and we let them pass all the time.

I have shot BBs before. Some by mistake, and some on purpose. One was with a selfbow I made, and by far, that little deer was my biggest and best trophy (see pic).
I buy the standard deer food plot mix for the south... wheat, rye, clover, and winter peas. It comes pre-mixed, in #50 bags. I sometimes buy turnip seed and mix it in. Do yourself a favor and get a soil sample and have it tested. It will give you some pretty focused info as to what you can do to improve soil chemistry to maximize the growth.
At least here in my part of AL, where there's not a lot of agriculture, a small food plot that's green and lush will attract deer from a long ways! The field with no deer in it is over a half- acre, and when it gets cold, the deer literally keep it mowed.
