Seriously wanting a 59er. Would you guys buy the Bear or Holm made custom. Have one of his River Runners and might be most favorite bow Ive owned. Price is close so not issue but if you could buy either which would you buy?

I have never owned a Holm Made bow but I have several high end quality custom bows that I really like. However when I bought the Bear 59er it has become my favorite bow to shoot. I have faster, prettier and more expensive bows, but for some reason the 59er is just so much fun to shoot!

It's pretty hard to beat Chad's bows! Super nice guy too. I would buy from the small guy instead of a big mfg.

It's not a Bear if it's not a Bear, so I don't understand the dilemma. Do you want a 59 Kodiak or something else. To me it's pretty plain.

Draw length. The 59er is a 60" bow, River Runner goes up to 64". My wife has a 59er, I shoot it occasionally, seems a pretty smooth little bow. I have a 31" draw, don't notice any stack, seems like a naturally accurate bow. BUT, it is only 35 lbs, a 50-60 lb bow, might feel a lot different. That out of the way, pretty tough call..

Looks like the River Runner is a cool bow, but it's perhaps a bow that's influenced by the 59 Kodiak and seems like quite a departure. The 59 Bear re-issue isn't exactly like the original 59, but it's pretty darn close, and it does have the direct Bear lineage.
Also, I have a 59 re-issue, it's really a nice bow and has exceeded my expectations, it's as nice as any of my customs. I may have lucked out and received an exceptional sample, YMMV.
I agree with above - if you want a 59 Kodiak, then the 59 re-issue from Bear is hard to beat and is the logical choice.
One thing to consider, if you want a 59 Kodiak but also want something a little bit different (as all Bear 59s are basically the same, save a choice between maple and purpleheart for the I-beam), you might want to consider Vintage Works. It's probably a 2-year wait, and they are more expensive, but those bows are stunning and are great shooters. I own two, but both are 61/62 copies, not a 59.

Sorry I cannot comment on the Holm made.
I can add to the 59 reissue Kodiak. For years I used to watch eBay for a real 59 Kodiak, I guess I read Bows on the Little Delta once too much or Fred Bears Field notes. Ha. Back then the originals were going for well over $600, heck probably $1,000.
I just could not see spending that much for a bow I wanted to SHOOT. I am not a collector. Guys on the LW would post how they wished Bear would revive some of the old classics and Bear listened.
The first year of production I shot one at Kalamazoo and Compton. I loved it, great grip, decent on speed, pointability and a classic beauty by my eye. Eventually bought one on Ebay and I still have it today. I enjoy this bow. It shoots FF strings and has all I ever wanted. I am VERY pleased with this bow. Obviously not the original but enough for me. I can really see why the Little Delta crew were so fond of the 59 Kodiak.
I also have a Bear 71' Super K that Bow Doc restored for me. That is a cool bow and after seeing the reproduction of the black Super K's that has my eye. I am holding back but I like what Bear has tried to do with the Super K's too.
I recommend the Bear with no negative at all for the Holm made.
Enjoy which ever one you choose! Bill

I have had a River Runner, 59er and now have the Holm Osprey. All great bows. For me the Osprey is the leader.

One thing that's nice about Vintage Works, you have the option of getting their 59 Kodiak repro in various lengths, 56", 58", 60", and 64" (and maybe 62"?). With Bear, you can have any length you want as long as it's between 59.9" and 60.1". VW also has the 59 'Hybrid', which is a riser that's nearly identical to the 59/60 Kodiak but with limbs more similar to the 61/62 Kodiak, so you have the look of the original 59 but with higher-performing limbs (well, limbs that perform more like the 61/62, higher-performance is subjective).
Only thing is, with VW you have to get in line, a very long wait (2 years?), expensive (but worth it in my opinion), and if you have an issue, VW is one guy that does this as a hobby, so turn-around on a warranty issue is just not going to be very quick. Not being critical of VW, I'm a big fan, but just understand what you're getting into, you're buying functional art from a master bowyer, and there's advantages and disadvantages to that.
I am a total VW fan-boy, but if I just wanted a bow to shoot and hunt with that was similar to a 59 Kodiak, I'd just get the Bear 59 re-issue and be done with it, it's really a decent bow.

I agree I would buy the vintage works and although not a Bear he can make them so no one could tell the difference. I believe his will perform a bit better then the Bears due to the fact he can use different limb materials. Scooby

I own one of Chad's 59 River Runners. 43# @ 28". It shoots faster than alot of 50 pounders I have owned. Points and shoots great! Easy to get used to the way it shoots. The leather grip fits my hand very well.

I had a couple River Runners.Thier a very nice 50s style recurve and shoot excellant all around.
These 59ers are getting very good reviews over the last few years and are very sharp looking bows.A few complaints on the finish and buckskin grip is the only negative I have read about.I have had not had the newer one.I had a few original 59ers and liked them alot.
If I wanted a 59er I would buy a Bear.
You might do a search on the Leatherwall on (New 59er) or similar wording and do some reading and see some pics.Quite a few threads should pop up.

Love my 62" RR. 2nd Holm bow I've owned and would buy a 3rd. Bocote and low grip, please. Craig - that's the most spectacular woodgrain I've seen on his.

Leaning towards Holm made mainly because of previous dealing with Chad. Also like 64in bows because of my 31in draw. Although I shoot my 60in RR just fine. Really like the shape and style of 59 Bear bow. I own 3 Bears and love the Bear heritage but will probably buy Holm. Thanks for inputs.

I am sure you will like his new 64" inch bow.I think it will fit you better personally than the 60 inch Bear at 31" draw.I had a 62" River Runner and it was very nice at about 30".
I have had 60 and 64 inch 59ers.I loved my 64 incher and thought it was one of the best vintage recurves I have ever had for my draw.Superb bow really. If you can find one second hand it would be a nice bow for you.
Good luck with your Holm made

Chad used my 1960 K-Special Deluxe and a 59 from another archer to take the base measurements as part of his design workup. So I highly doubt his versions could be anything but "as good as" and likely tweaked to be as good as it can get.

I still have a bad taste in my mouth on a Vintage Works bow I had. Holcombs are sweet. Never heard a negative thing about Chads bows. I own an original 59'r.

I have owned several copies but not a Holm-made bow. I do own a new 59 and can only say I prefer it over the copies simply for the fact that is a BEAR Bow!
I will admit several of the copies I owned were as good or better than the Bear 59 as far as workmanship.
