Hey all,

I need some help from you guys on this. I have a 1971 Bear Grizzly that I am trying to get quiet. I know this bow is capable of being a really quiet bow because last year when I bought a new string for it, I wrote the guy back that made the string and told him how quiet the bow was and that I couldn't believe it. The problem of course is that I didn't record the setup details of the bow that day. Now I am stuck trying to figure out what to try to get me where I want to be with this bow.

So, I'd like for you all to give me the range of brace heights to use in my experimenting here. If you want to suggest brace heights and nock set height, feel free to do so. I'll gladly take the suggestions you all offer. I don't want you all to think I am some kind of dunce or something like that, I would rather ask for help than spend an entire day trying combinations until I find what works.

I appreciate you all helping me with this info for my Bear Grizzly. I'm looking forward to getting it back to hunting shape.

Thanks for your time and help. Larry

This is what is recommended.

Some bows just seem to be very difficult to get really quiet to the human ear...do game animals hear the same as humans...lots of game has been killed with bows that we consider noisy today...the key is to shoot at relaxed animals

If your bow was quiet and has become noisy, it stands to reason that the string has stretched (they don't shrink) and a tightening is in order. Even if you get too many twists in a string, it won't hurt to go ahead and keep tightening until you find the quiet spot. You can then measure so that you will know where to initially adjust a new string.

I'd suggest twisting the string until you can see about 1/4" of string groove under the string. Start there and work your way up.

No one can tell you "the" brace height for your bow and set up.

You need to find the sweet spot that works for you.

The most important starting point is to buy a string three inches shorter in actual length than the length of the bow measured along the belly from the upper string nock to the lower string nock. That will get you started on the right path.

What is the present brace height? As Brad stated, it sounds like your string has stretched if the bow was already quiet with the same string.

Jim Castro's advice is sound and where I start. A bit of the limb groove showing then shoot, unstring, slide the top loop down the limb, pull off the bottom loop and twist five turns, restring and test.

You'll find the right brace height in short order. You'll have to do it with every bow you own.

Did you change arrows, tab/glove, form, rest, nock point?

I would start at 7 3/4 and move up until good arrow flight with properly spined arrows is achieved.
