So I have been eye balling a Gharing recurve on the RMSGear website for the last month and I finally cracked and bought it. I always wanted one when they were being made and never got around to it. This bow is 60" 57# at 28 which is about as close to perfect as you can get for me. If anyone has any experience or comments about them I would like to here them. Thanks

I seen that one too. Good looking bow. Hope you like it.

If you do a search on Gharing you should find some pics of my Takedown. I have talked to both Jon and his wife on the phone. The most impressive thing for me is that Jon built those bows with hand tools.

Look for my thread titled, oddly enough, Jon Gharing Bows from 2013. I am pretty sure you will see your bow there. Jon liked those bone thumbrests

Thanks S.M

Dave I have seen your takedown and it's a Beauty for sure.

Any idea what the brace might be? I was thinking about starting at around 8"

From: Box H
Date: 06-Dec-16

I think 8" might be a little high. On my Gharing (take-down) the suggested brace height is 7 3/8". I tried that and it seemed just right. I shoot split finger.

I never played with the brace height on that bow since I never did anything other than shoot targets with it. A friend built me a string for it and he made it short to allow for stretch. He forgot what a great stringmaker he is and I doubt it ever got below an 8.5 inch bh. Static tips can be as quiet as any longbow so start at 7 inches and learn how it changes maybe 4 twists at a time. They can also be kind of tricky to find that deed silent spot.

Oops...that dead silent spot

Congratulations Panzer, you got a very good bow! I have 15 bows and have let a bunch of others go over the years. My 58" Gharing, one piece, "Nontypical" static recurve (which I bought from Lefty4 on this forum), is one of my all time favorites. It is fast, accurate, quiet and rugged. I'm pretty sure I shoot it with an 8 1/2" brace height (I'm not at home now). I also have a Gharing longbow. Both bows are exceptionally well made and have some unique innovative features.

In my mind, when people say no bow is inherently more accurate than any other, this bow proves them wrong. The well thought out limb geometry makes them extremely stable and forgiving.

Let us know how you like it after you get it dialed in. - John

John Glad you are liking the Nontypical. I wish that had been a lefty!

I will let you know Fisher Cat. I believe that the bow I have coming is a "nontypical", but I'm not for certain.

Doug,

My only regret is it took me a couple of years to close the deal with you. Hindsight is 20/20 I suppose. Even though I'm not looking for any new bows, I'm always looking... I'll let you know if I find a lefty.

Panzer, I saw that bow on the RMR website. I believe it is a "retro" or 50's type version of the "Nontypical." Its a pretty bow, but too similar to the one I already have, so I left it for you. ;^) - John

Thanks for passing it over, I always wanted a 50's style recurve.

The 60" non-typical that Jon made has 7 3/8 bh and takes a 58 3/4 long string. They are a great shooting bow, I love my 62" recurves from him. I would love to see some pictures when you get it all set-up.

Thanks for the info Wasteland, I will post a pic when it arrives.

From: Fisher Cat

Panzer,

My 58" Nontypical is braced at 8 5/8" to the deepest part of the grip and 8" to the rear of the shelf. I don't know if this is "correct" because it shoots so well like that, I don't care to mess with it much. It came with a 7 1/2" string that someone online had recommended to the previous owner, but that was very loud and shot poorly. You may also notice the draw weight feels a bit heavier than marked. These are not what is commonly referred to as "smooth drawing" bows, but that never was very important to me and they make up for it in every other way. Hope this helps. - John

I meant it came with a string that produced a 7 1/2" brace height to the deepest part of the grip. Again, that was terrible compared to the 8 5/8" brace height. - John

Fisher Cat,

That is very interesting and produced a lot of questions and wonderings that I'll have to ask Jon when I see him later this week. Good information to hear.

Justin,

You are lucky to have access to Jon Gharing. Please let us know what he says about the brace heights. I would also like to know about using low stretch strings on his bows. Both of my bows have those wild, thick limb tips. Because they are so different from the norm, I won't try low stretch strings without hearing from him about it first. They shoot great with B-55 anyway. Thanks a lot. - John

I'll be seeing him Sunday to do some brain picking I'll post what me and him talk about. I know the last strings he was getting was made out of BCY 452X. Please feel free to ask questions, because I see him on regular basis being that he's my father-in-law. I know he likes hearing that people still like what he made.

Great choice for a father in law...remind him there are lots of us who would be happy to see him marketing bows again... maybe remind him welding is a young person's game

The early loading force draw curve of a true static tip like Jon makes is not for everyone...it is only for people who understand those bows give the effort we put into them back as well as any design out there

That is bow I had years ago. I can't remember the brace height I used unfortunately. But I always go as low as I can. The photo I saved from when I bought it; I remember lower the brace from what is pictured. Nice shooting bow for sure; and yes I miss it. The limb tips were very unique.

Here is the Gharing that I bought from RMS-Gear. The bow is in very good condition with the specs being 60" 57# at 28. I have had the bow about a week and it has become my favorite recurve to shoot. I tried 2018's and it didn't like them. I then tried 2117's and it kind of liked them. On a whim I tried a 2219 with 250gr field tips and the bow loves them which came as a shock I suppose but it's great because I also shoot those out of my Chek-Mate.

Any idea about the string material and who made it...when it comes to dynamic spine required the string is a huge factor

I had a Gharing longbow about 10 years ago, wish I had kept it.

Like many other bows I had I traded or sold it, stupid move on my part.

Always wanted to try his recurve. Talked to him once on the phone, very nice gentleman.

Too bad he's not building bows any longer.
