Well I learned a lesson last night> I was mounting a bow quiver to my Sage riser in the AMO bushings like a Quickie would do. Everything seemed fine until I turned the bow around and found the wood in the sight window was pushed out! Apparently the quiver mounting screws were too long and pushed into the lams of the riser (thin in that area) and destroyed them.I never thought to double check the screw length. After I removed the screws I had the Idea to draw the bow. At about 3/4 draw, CRACK! I let down to see the wood totally broken horizontally through the sight window and the riser was actually twisted there! Wow, what a surprise! Well, I tossed her in the firewood pile and chalked it up to a learning experience. Always double check fasteners! So now I get to buy a new riser, Or a whole new bow, or maybe a different bow, maybe a Sage deluxe (?) or sell my limbs, maybe a nice old Bear or maybe........

I wouldn't just trash it just yet. If it came from Lancaster Archery they may replace it. I would think you would have been really torqueing on those screws to have them push through the sight window of the riser when they bottomed out being to long. If you weren't give them a call and explain what happened. You've got nothing to lose. DANNY

Why is it Lancaster's responsibility to replace the riser in this circumstance? That would be almost like calling Ford to replace you changed your own oil and forgot to put the drain plug back in. Is that the fair or right thing to do?

Sipsey,
First I didn't say "it was their responsibility" to replace it. I said call them they "may" replace it. The screws should not have gone through pushing into the sight window cut out. He would have had to of been really torqueing on the screws if the holes were drilled properly. I have used screws that were also to long to fit in to the bushings for a sight/quiver mount, when they bottomed out I would have had to really torqued on them to push them through into the sight window. If the holes were drilled to deep and the wood was thin enough it wouldn't have taken much pressure to push them through. That would be a manufacturing defect of over drilling the holes same as under drilling them. That is why I suggested calling Lancaster and explain to them what happened. He had nothing to lose. If it didn't come from Lancaster I would guess he wouldn't be calling them.
If the vehicle from Ford had a cross threaded oil pan plug from the factory would it be the owner responsibility to have the pan retapped and pay for the new bolt. DANNY

I measured my sage qwiver holes, they are 1\2 inch to bottom, just right for kwkikwiver. the holes are a little deeper than the inserts. so the inserts are likely a little shorter than a half inch, maybe metric? as for selling your limbs... good luck. though they are popular and good limbs, they are a hard sell for me. had sage with extra riser for 85tyd , no takers lol. I can sell it locally but it might take 3 or 4 years. at 71 I might not make it......ron

Eww, that sucks. Hopefully your thread can help keep someone else from doing the same thing.
I wouldn't call anybody in hopes of a replacement. I like my accountability. I'd suck it up and consider it another lesson learned. But that's me.
A buddy of mine did something similar to a Groves riser with the limb bolts. He replaced them and the new ones were a tad longer. I was able to completely separate the pieces, remove the old glue, reassemble, refinish the riser, and give him the right length limb bolts.

Is it true if you don' lift the hood ya don't have to fix it.?laminated risers can and do break.Sometimes we try to make things too pretty and pay the price for it.I find it so dissapointing that some of the prettiest wood is structurally weak .Its amazing how a simple thing like a screw weakens what should be a solidly built riser. Actually, it is a Plymouth thing. In my younger days I was changing oil in a Valient and enjoying a beer. After draining the oil I replaced the plug, and fired up the engine. After the engine light didn't go off I got to wondering, and sure enough on the seat was the new oil. I hadn't moved and the engine ran for maybe 20 seconds- no harm done that I know of. Sorry about your riser- sounds like a perfect reason to get that new bow you had your eye on.

Were the screws the ones that came with the bow quiver? Were the threads machine threads? Or coarse wood threads?

Linecutter- Didn't mean anything personal. Every person has to use their own judgement. Some of us, me included, have screwed up something while trying to make it better. If we screw it up, it is our responsibility to handle it ourselves and not try to get someone else to pay for our mistakes. One of the problems in this country is some of our integrity has been lost, starting in Washington D.C. and flowing down to the masses.

So you drilled a hole in the riser and placed screws. There are lot of other quivers where you don't have to do that.

It is unfair to ask Lancaster for anything. They are nice enough to actually replace the riser and that's just not right. I would suck it up and learn from it.
That's as bad as some Leatherwallers shooting concrete blocks then getting free replacement broadheads from Magnus. Totally wrong. I always thought that was just ignorant!

What if there was a defect in the riser? Never hurts to call, they can always say no and if they determined it wasn't a defective riser, you could say no to a replacement if they offered and it made you feel better.
To bad the riser wasn't built in Pakistan.

Seems to me that running a screw into it suggests the failure wasn't a defect.
bvd, a 63 Pontiac was a rolling defect, more so if it was built on a Monday :-)

Sage limbs make for nice-shooting WARFS and FRANKENBOWS. I am a cheapskate and contribute to the downward pressure on used limb prices.
What is this "oil plug" several have mentioned? Does my 1996 Toyota RAV4 have one of those? Do occasional oil spots on my garage floor indicate the "oil plug" is defective? If so, is there a federal program to fix this?
