Going to the vet in the morning to have our beloved dachshund put down. I know there are skeptics out there as to the dachshunds hunting abilities. Well our miss mina was a hunting machine. Best rabbit dog ever!! She would always kill more rabbits than any of us armed with our bows!! Also the best camp dog ever. No mice in the cook shack with her in camp. Always warmed the foot of my sleeping bag for me. I watched her cross a bear track that was about ten seconds old. She threw her head back and howled and took off up the ridge. With my shepherd and my other hunting dog with her. Got them back before it got ugly. Damn dogs, they really become such a huge part of our lives. Really going to miss that dog.

Joseph, very sorry to hear that. We all can't live without our pets, but when we have to, it gets tough to swallow. Most every breed has the hunter instinct BTW, just bred for hunting different kinds of animals. Sorry you lost your buddy. Lots of good memories remain.

I really feel your pain. I put my beloved (Remington) to sleep 3 months ago tomorrow. He had lung cancer and I could not bear to see him suffer as he was. Cryedlike a baby and still shed a tear every once in a while when I think about him. I have had quite a few but I don't think there will ever be another one like him.

I am very sorry, that has always been the most difficult time for me as well. It never matters how few or many times we go through it. Prayers to you and your family.

Sorry for the loss, they do become family. I have a wirehair and she is spoiled rotten.

Feel extra bad for you Jungle Hunter. Will pray for your comfort.

Got two part long hair, long nosed dachshunds which are as large as basset hounds (35 + maybe 40 lb dogs) but look like smaller long haired dachshunds. They would be good sized dogs if they had long legs.

I call'em a bunch of long nosed hound bums cause they eat us out of house and home but they are the best dogs we ever had. Rescue dogs which grew old with us. So glad they made it to our house. Always wondered if dogs go to heaven?

I understand. Get another dog and enjoy a different personality. There is nothing like a puppy to take away the pain of losing an old friend. Life is too short to stay down in the dumps.

I was ready to shoot two of mine yesterday. They keep running off and hunting. I let them out to play with them but first I went to fill the water trough for the cows. They pretended to be tending to their business until I turned my back and then off they went. I went looking but didn't find them. I could hear them on game as one of them has a very distinct yip, yip, yip when he is chasing something. They came home around midnight and started barking at some deer from the back porch. I chewed them out and went back to bed. This morning they are all contrite and wanting a pet and a bowl of food. Sorry, suppertime was at six yesterday and you guys missed it. Mixed emotions of love and irritation here.

A loss of a pet IMO is comparable to a loss of a family member. Doesnt matter if its a dog, cat, horse etc.

Relationships build thru years of being side by side.

God speed to your partner and prayers for your heart.

It's been two years and my heart still aches a bit. She came to us when someone dropped her in front of our house out in the country where we live. She was only about 6 months old. Never knew Rotties could be so loving and gentle until our Maggie came along and shared 12 great years with us. My thoughts are with you.

Been three years since my Black Lab Female "Abby" she retrieved more "first" ducks for people I took hunting than you can possibly imagine. Lost her at 12 years to lymphoma. Lost her brother the next year. Just now getting to the point of getting a new pup. Getting a Draht. At the same time still think that someday it will happen again. Prayers and thoughts with ya!

Thanks for all the good thoughts. Going to be a tough day. My youngest son is going with us. I think we'll spend the rest of the day in the woods. Maybe go chase some bunnies. So sad :-(

Yep, lost our 14 yr lab 5 moths ago and she was some ones throw away. Great lab. We are picking up a Belguim Shepard pup on the 9th and the wife still says its to early. Dauchands are great hunters and bred to crawl into dens. They hunted in packs. We were given the best barn cat as the owners feared the pack of Dauchands would kill her. During the recission they became the Dauchands dumping yard as all the kids came back to live with them and left the dogs when they left. They were like mini Raptors.

Pets are not just animals, they are part of the family. My father in law is a big tough guy that would always yell at their dog when it would get exited. When he (the dog) got bone cancer and had to be put down, Pops buried his head in a towel and just sobbed. I never seen a man like him cry so hard. It's a tough deal.

Every time I read one of these threads I hurt because I know my time is coming its inevitable they don't live for ever.

WHAT THEY DO IS LIVE FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS THOUGH NO MATTER HOW MANY DOGS COME AND GO!THEY ALL HAVE A PLACE AND A BED TURNED DOWN.

MY DOGS STAY WITH ME FOR EVER JUST LIKE ALL THE WOMEN AND THE AND ANIMALS AND FISH AND BIRDS OF THE AIR I HAVE TAKEN AND BEEN ALLOWED TO HAVE.

My deepest condolences go out to you may somehow you find rest in this Lord willing allow this fellow and his family to heal from this loss quickly and give them peace.

AMEN

On a side note: Maybe the pup goes into the golden fields for the saints? Do we know? Hope your able to have peace over this I will not allow my dog to suffer 1 day if she gets inflicted with something. She's been the best one yet and I have been blessed with many a good dog and terrific hunters in my life as well as them being my pets and best friends.

I believe one of the secrets to a good animal is keep them with you as close as you can that's possible. IF MINE GOES I WILL GET ANOTHER AS QUICK AS I CAN. I LET A 10 YEAR SPAN GO BY BETWEEN THIS DOG AND MY LAST GOLDEN RT. AND WON'T DO THAT AGAIN. I MISSED OUT ON THOSE YEARS.

Joseph I don't know how to cut and paste but when I had to put my Remington down 3 months ago some kind person on here sent me the poem Rainbow Bridge. Google it and I think you will understand why it means so much to me. I had a granite marker made for Remington and put on it. You were my best friend. I will meet you at Rainbow Bridge.

Thank you all so much. Mina passed in my son's arms. She was his dog from the time she was a week old. She's buried next to our black shepherd, who was mina's big sister and companion for many years. The one thing I will always remember is her incredible courage. She would tree coons three times her size. Courageous to the point of fearlessness. She never backed down from anything, ever. At the same time was the most gentle and affectionate dog I've ever had. I know I will be blessed with another dachshund some day. It's inevitable.

Had an Irish Setter that was 15 years old, had a heart attack, I revived her, she lived a few more hours, that was 25 years ago and it still brings tears to my eyes. I have four dogs now and will have to go through that four more times if I live long enough.

I can't express the feelings of despair, sadness, feeling lost and totally breaking down when they go because they are more loving than most humans and will never let you down and they are always there when you need them.

I am truly sorry for your loss and everyone who has lost their best friend.

I tried to avoid opening this thread, as I, too, have been through it. So, so, sorry you are going through this, Joseph.

Let the grieving process run its healing course. Trying to "replace" a departed pet too soon isn't fair to you or the new one.
