I'm wanting to see if I can get a LB built by incorporating a really old Osage fence post? I own Shiloh Ranch in Oklahoma and I have some old, but solid fence post from the 1950's that are still solid as a rock. I would like to have a lone bow built from it, or at lease some of it. Perhaps laminates, veneers under clear glass and handle/riser section. I would like it for sentimental reasons and of course functional! ;-)

Ideas? You may PM me or email me if you like. I'm open to suggestions. [email protected]

No doubt, you could make pretty much what you want proving the post are not cracked or full of staples. I could see a dandy take down selfbow. If you have plenty I would like to get a pair.

I think just about any bowyer will do that for you...assuming the wood is dried and cured. Some might want it cut into a dimension they can use first.

I know Kegan at Omega will.....

The post is 60 plus years old...definitely cured! :)

I can take pics. That will help, but the post of that age will have length Wise cracks.

Thx

Matt

That maybe kinda tuff getting good laminations out of it. Possibly veneers with a good core of newer Osage. JF

I had a friend that made a selfbow out of a fence post that was allegedly 100 years old. It was a dandy shooter too

You should be able to get a longbow riser or at least some parts from it. I had a osage log and was able to use it in a riser for a recurve. Longbow shouldn't require as much wood. If you talking a wooden bow no idea.

If you send me a post say 66" long min.? I'll make you a selfbow..your call.? I don't want anything in return just friendship, brothers of the bow, my honor...that's the way we roll around here on the leather wall .!

I would rather have a laminated with glass bowl, not selfbow. Sorry, I should have been clearer. I figured cut veneers under glass and handlet wood Osage all from post.

You could make a laminated bow from the scraps rattlesnake had left over from the self bow. The self bow would have a lot more meaning to someone down the line.I would give his offer a little more thought. he makes nice bows.

I thought the same thing Badger. Plus some knife handle material :)

I would think most any of the bowyers on the sponsor list could build your bow. There is a bowyer in SW Indiana that can stabilize the riser wood (if needed) using a vacuum process, similar to Futurewood..

What exactly are you looking for? Poundage and length.. Hill style, Hybrid, mild D/R,, 3 piece take down, 2 piece with sleeve, etc.. That might help with Bowyer suggestions.

Here is the post. Perhaps nothing at all can be done with it. There are longitudinal cracking but the wood is solid and very heavy so there is good wood in it. It's 7 foot long and perhaps only the lower 4 ft can be utilized.

I'm ok if no one can work with it but I had to ask. I'm thinking there is at least veneers and handle wood.

I prefer a reflex/deflex under clear glass.

Split it along that crack than cut an inch off each end and take a picture of the end grain.

I wonder if the part that was in the ground has any unique mineral staining in the wood grains?

Good idea 4Nolz!

might try Kenny... he has the ability to cut lams as well as builds an excellent bow. I know he was slowing down to work a real job, but doubt that he has quit all together.

Mike Mecredy. That would be right up his alley, and he's a master.
