I've had this one on the burner for awhile now. The most interesting part of this is the bark pocketed maple, that came from the bottom of Lake Superior. There is this guy that was doing salvage on the old shipwrecks, tha sank. He kept seeing all this timber that as logged back in the 1800s. He pulled a log up and dried it and be hold it as in Great condition. He decided heck with the sunken ships and got salvage rights on all the old growth timber. Being the cold clear deep water the timbers were perfect. They x-ray after drying, before cutting to be sure it's clean,of foreign objects. Like stone points and musket balls. Wow this is original old growth wood. I found what they called barkpocket maple and I'm going to use it for riser and outer limbs. JF

Being as the barkpocket maple has voids 'holes' I'm going to foot it with Osage, another great North American, over looked hardwood. Then cap it with a piece of highly figured Missouri gunstock walnut. JF

I'm going to put a inner core of,you guessed it, Osage. That way I'll be keeping with a North American wood, tried and tested. I'll also add a update for stability, .020 stabil core carbon. Just under the back, barkpocket maple. This will back some open holes from the old maple. Hopefully add stability. JF

So after cutting and grinding laminations, of.001 taper,4 of them and one thin Osage parallel. I've come up with a stack thickness. JF

From: bodymanbowyer

bodymanbowyer's embedded Photo

Here we go.66" bow 16- 1/2" riser. .430 total stack, .040 on the back and .050 on the belly the rest is all barkpocket Maple and Osage and .020 of carbon. The maple is almost a veneer but still a taper. .030 at the nock and .060 at the butt I think. It's thin. Should come out 47-50# unless the carbon really kicks in, then maybe 54#. JF

After grinding I sand the corners with 80grt. Just enough to remove the curled taoe and to smooth out any glass slivers. Sand from riser to tips and at a angle from tape off towards the wood. Don't go back and forth. JF

I was just thinking. Some turquoise powder would have been cool in the pockets of the maple under the clear glass in the limbs. You know like the knife builders have done. Maybe I'll try it out on the riser if there's any pockets when it get to shape. Just thinking. JF

From: bodymanbowyer

There is a inspiration for building this bow. Last week I was on vacation. It was 4:45am. I was almost to my hunting place. When a young 4-6 point Buck decided he wanted to race across the road,in front of me. JF

From: bodymanbowyer
Date: 18-Nov-16

Instead of hitting the brakes, which would have put him right in front of me, I put the peddle to the floor. Well he hit me in the left front fender, bounced off into my door, then into my box side. I've been real close to hitting deer before. This was my first. I turned around, figured I would pick him up,after calling the police. He was gone. Probably no insurance,so he ran :( JF

Oletrapper, you think the bow is gorgeous wait till you see what I got in the mail today. I was going to finish the top tip tonight. But I had a slight happy delay. You see bodork asked if he could get some of the Barkpocket Maple, remember it came from the bottom of Lake Superior, centuries old. I said sure no problem. He makes beautiful Bows and knives! Little did I know he made me a knife :) The blade is a body file that is late uncle used, the scales are Osage and Barkpocket Maple from me. What a dream to have a bodymans knife to match my Maquoketa Revenge Bow. Holy cow was I surprised :) The two are such a PERFECT match. Merry Christmas to me. Thank- you Mike 'bodark'. JF

Glad you like it Jeff! Just to clarify, the file was used by my dad in the body repair business way back when lead was used before bondo in Colorado. It was fun keeping it all a secret from you! Mike

Now that my head is back on straight after the big Surprise yesterday. I'm using a 10D finish nail and some stick-it 320grt sandpaper rolled on some and working the edges. Every possible way to get rid of any sharp,or deep scratches from the file. JF

All smooth sanded and ready for the first saturation coat of big Jim's Buffalo gloss epoxy. I get nothing for advertising, but it just plain works good. Soaks right down to the deep pores. A few more as needed to fill them up, so it can be sanded smooth and flat. JF

From: Dry Bones
Date: 05-Dec-16

Jeff Nice Photobomb of the backdrop bow. LOL Crafy. I almost believe there is purpose to every part of your pics... :-) So, MuddyIA is that a refinish to be done? Once you have a bow that comes through Jeff's shop, things just aren't the same anymore. Ask Me how I know.

-Bones

From: muddyIA

Bones, I traded for that Explorer I a couple weeks ago and 30 minutes after getting it out of the box it fell off a bench and onto concrete. Really dinged up the side. Jeff lives about a hour from me and said he'd help me out and get it pretty again. I haven't even shot it. Text messages confirm it should be in my part of Iowa next week. And how do you know things aren't the same?

MuddyIA, I met Jeff through the repair of another recurve I had. He was very honest with me from the start, but we tried to save it. The finish was a lot better when it came back from Jeff then when I first received it. Nothing against the maker, but Jeff does an Exceptional job. I now have one of the best looking bows Jeff has ever made. :-) In my opinion. ;-) It shoots great and deathly silent. I already connected on a spike with it this season and haven't had it a full two months yet. He just makes bows that darn good. Like this revenge bow this post is about. It is top notch. As will the refinish he will do on yours.

Sorry,my smart phone has been acting up. I lost my place. Any how. I sanded it down with 400grt and am applying a few more coats of epoxy sealer,to make sure all the pores are filled. It'll get sanded again before final spray finish, with Helsman spar varnish urythane in satin sheen. So far it's filling in just fine. JF

Ok, now that I'm home with a bad cold. I thought I'd finish the buildalong thread. By making a string and installing a calfhair rest and sideplate. The string is 20 strands of Bcyx. 20 because it fits my Gold Tip Traditional Classics and Traditional, perfect. and it's quiet and no padding required.
