I saw a Super- k on e-bay today and the seller states its a vintage bow with "modern" carbon fiber backing strips installed which makes the bow a super fast speed demon. This is the first time I have heard of such a thing. What gives?

Not probably a good idea. First of all it would increase the stack thickness enough to hugely jump the draw weight. So imagine he is aware of that and uses some thin stuff like 10 thou. Now that is so stiff it will carry all the weight and break before the glass does, causing a hinge and stress riser. The extreme stiffness of the backing will put even more stress on the facing than it was calibrated to hold. So maybe one wears down the glass and reduces it's thickness, that would require very careful workmanship and a good glue bond, and still not fix all the problems.

I don't think it is a great idea. You still have some waste weight in there that reduces the efficiency one would get from an all carbon bow.

I saw it too. It is a nice looking bow. It did add approx 9 pounds. I thought about getting it, but I think I will stay away. N.Y, Let me know what you think if you get it. ~Wojo

It wasn't the carbon material that specifically increased the draw weight but rather the addition to the stack (limb thickness). It would not take much to up the draw nine pounds.

Probably a ruined bow!

If it was linear carbon in it's thinnest hard laminate form, it could have easily caused a 9# gain and will destroy the other lams eventually. Would take a bit more thickness of woven to cause that much gain.

If it is linear carbon on a recurve it will splinter off the edges. If it is bias ply it will work if applied right. No reason that carbon over glass would splinter the lams. I have built bows with carbon under light glass and veneers many , many times with good performance and no ill effect over a long time. I also have a bow in possession that was built by another bowyer that came out too light and he added carbon to the back over the glass. Shot it many times and is a really good bow.

God bless, Steve

I don't know. Personally, I think he desecrated a vintage Bear. Just my opinion. ~Wojo
