So, I've been tuning my new to me Toelke Super D, I've gone away from the FF it came with back to D97, just cos I prefer the way it shoots and feels. Got my arrows sorted, started messing with the brace height.... pretty inconsistant. Started thinking the arrows were under spined as I was getting some irratic flight. But then I'd get a group with most of the fletches touching. What's going on? Started concerntrating on my release as I noticed it was a bit noisy, but I was wondering if it was just because I hadn't found the sweet spot of the brace height.
Concentrate on release.... good arrow.. good arrow... noisy... good..... Arghhhh!
For some reason when I nocked one of the arrows I looked down at my hand and the way my fingers lay across the the string.... it's then that I notice a sizeable groove in the first joint middle finger of my glove! The string was hanging up on it when I released!
Pulled the glove off and shot 6 arrows bare hand, group shrank immediately!
Tested my patience I tell ya. Im going to try and put some leather conditioner into the glove and see if I can get it back to shooting Condition, otherwise I'm up for another glove.
Cheers, Scott.

I've got a new America Leather Crossover that I will start breaking in after deer season. The one I have now will probably be done by next spring.

You don't get that groove with the American Leather Crossover glove because it has inserts to prevent that. And it takes about 3 shots to break one in, for me at least. I have no idea how long the Crossover glove will last, because I have had mine and using it only for 6 years. I bought a spare. I will probably never need another one for the rest of my archery life, since I'm 64 now.

I like those little thin skinned gloves I buy a few of them and just replace them. Thicker gloves get groves for sure which bugs me. I like the glove for my stick bow because I switch holds for longer and shorter targets. I hunt close range with 3 under and do indoor archery that way too. However long targets like roving and field I will switch to split.

I used to use Dura Gloves to avoid that very problem, and they largely did the job.
A few years ago I switched to an AAE Cavalier Elite Cordovan tab, the only tab I've ever found that I liked. After the years and I don't know how many thousand shots it's still ungrooved and basically unworn, just broken in. I have to stress CORDOVAN, not their "super leather" which I really didn't like.
I shoot split and use the finger separator but it works just fine for three under without the separator.

My Kangaroo cross over glove is going on two years and shows no wear. I used tabs in the summer usually but a index finger injury causes pain. Getting older is tough.

I had a brief time with a Damascus style glove and actually liked it since it is much like a tab. Used it for a couple years and lost it. Grabbed one of my tabs that I had for years and have not used a glove since, save for some back up emergency if I misplace my tab. Never found anything better than a leather tab..either plain or hair backed. Right now I have a Rick Barbee tab and an old Neet from a previous century.

Just curious as to what poundage you are shooting? I have never noticed a groove in my glove making a substantial difference in my release.

pdk25, it's a #50@28" drawn to 29". Not that heavy but the gloves probably a couple of years old now so it's shot a lot of arrows. I've just ordered a Dura-Glove and a Black Widow Calf Hair tab. I really haven't used a tab since I was a kid but reading the feedback here I'm going to revisit.
Thanks for the replies folks.
Cheers, Scott.

Good luck. I usually use a glove with cordovan leather. They don't seem to take a deep groove. I shoot a little heavier that that typically, and it may just be enough to make any level of groove not important. Interesting though.

What brand glove do you have? I usually use Howard hill gloves, and I treat them and I haven't had any problem with grooves. I shoot 55-60# bows. I bought a used American Leathers glove to see if I liked it, and I did. I have a buffalo leather Big Shot Crossover glove being made right now. It should be here next week and I'm hoping I like it.I do use a tab sometimes, a palm tab with finger separator. I shoot slightly better with it, but not enough that I’ll give up my gloves.

Well my Black Widow Calf Hair tab arrived today. Wow! Can't belief how slick the release is with these. Dunno if it's tightened my groups up any but I'm definitely more consistent with it. A lot less flyers. (None really).
Think I might be a tab convert.

I shot compound with a tab for years. When I switched tio recurves I got a glove, wanted to be 'traditional'. After 3 years and six gloves, thin, thick, reinforced, cordovan tips etc. I bought a cordovan Bateman tab. Still using them 15 years later.

Another tab user here as well. I started with a cheap glove and had to poke the stalls in my chest to seat them tight on my fingers, every shot. Good gloves are probably better. Beats me. Tab for a couple decades now.

Heard Ron Jenkins say glove are too stiff, perfect, and worn out. The perfect part doesn't last too long.
Tabs are way better. Nobody in the Olympics shoots a glove.

You guys are way to tough on the gloves. I good glove on the right hand will shoot with any tab. The right glove can give great string feel which also carries over to shot control. I have shot both over the years and both are good. Personal choice pretty much. I do believe the glove gives a little more control.

One of the biggest differences between tabs and gloves is gloves are a lot more complex. What that means is that if you look at the gloves for sale out there, about 99% of them are crap. If you look at the tabs there is hardly any huge difference between the olympic ones and the better cheapish ones, or dead cheap ones. Where can you get a plastic molded glove that shoots as well as an Olympic tab for 10 bucks (olympic tabs have a lot of anchor related stuff, but the string release part is some left over shoe leather.)
If you want a good glove get an American Leathers. There are a few others, but AL is far and away the best. I make both, and tabs are about as difficult to make once you have your patterns as it is difficult to take a bite out of a sandwich.
A good glove and a good tab, pretty much the same, but most often you are talking about a bad glove and a good tab.

And then if you have a good glove, it probably doesn't fit anyway. People's fingers vary a lot including length relationships due to testosterone exposure in utero. The American Leathers glove works extra well fit wise, due to some clever features, but it can still not fit pretty quite easily. In a lot of ways the tethered finger stalls idea was better.
