I've seen a bunch of squirrels this year hunting but I thought you would like to hear about some real squirrel numbers. I got this info from the 2017 Farmers Almanac. In 1749 Penna. paid 3 cents for every squirrel killed, they killed 640,000.

In 1822 100,000 squirrels trekked across Indiana heading for Ohio. Several dozen hunters from Franklin Co. Killed 19,000 squirrels.

In 1834 there was a stampede into southern Illinois that swam the Ohio. River. A hunt of ten men killed 30,000 squirrels on each side of the river.

In 1842 a grey squirrel emigration from Iowa to Wisconson lasted weeks and encompassed a area 130 miles wide by 150 miles long. They estimated the number of squirrels to be a half a billion.

My Granfather told me about one in Elk county where hundreds of squirrels were traveling through the woods. Has anyone ever seen anything like this?

I never saw it but did read that i does occur when conditions are right. Must amazing to witness.

Yep they did the same thing to my tomatos before the hickory trees started producing. They're fun and frustrating at the same time

I see it twice a year, in breeding seasons... My lovely bride is an wildlife rescuer. Every breeding season she ends up with a several babies that need a little help.

No, but I was in NYC walking down Broadway on Lower Manhattan once back in the '80s, near the Flatiron Building, and I saw something that looked like oil pouring out of a street sewer gratings. Looked like oil flooding right out of it and down the street. I got closer, and realized it was rats coming up out of the subway system and running sown Broadway at 0100 hours, like the Pied Piper was calling for them from a couple blocks down. They were squeezing through holes 1 inch by 2 inches...unreal. They filled the street as I just stood there and watched them keep coming for close to two or three minutes, running down Broadway. It was amazing, and thoroughly disturbing at the same time.

I had a similar experience to TrapperKayak, but on the Johnston Atoll and the island of Yap back in 2003 on a range ride supporting USTRANSCOM while stationed at Scott AFB.

Found a bazillion green un husked walnuts in the edge of the rafters of the wood shed connected to our house. Will have to set some traps when I get back up to our cottage in NY in three weeks. Neighbors house burned last year. Those pesky varmits like to chew on wood and wires so gotta get'em. They can sure cause some damage.

Saw new fennel seeds (mouse droppings) too in the walk in pantry so its fall for sure. Will trap them too. Both squirrels and mice love peanut butter as much as I do.

Yeah, brown rice starts showing up in our garage this time of year. Squirrels ate all my wifes sunflowers this week. We used to have rats in our chicken and mink coups. I used to work in downtown Portland, OR, and there was a building next to my work place that had holes in the ground all around it. One night I worked late, after dark, came out and rats went scurrying all over when I walked by it. I like tree rats a lot better, and would not even feed my dog or cat flesh from a 'rat'. Peanut butter on mouse traps = XX mice!!

In central lower Michigan there are a couple of these massive squirrel migrations described in pioneer history accounts of the 1830s. Farmers sometimes lost their entire crops to them. It would have been something to see.

Have never seen, but heard of these migrations, what provokes them ?

A few years ago we had a big squirrel migration here in West Virginia. There were dead squirrels everywhere on the highways--I mean every few feet for miles.

had one in northwest Arkansas, southwest Missouri in 1973.

Several hundred fox squirrels came past me one morning in the late '80s. I didn't see another one until '97. Go figure.

Since Yuh don't wanna waste arrows on ugly filthy rats? Might be time to dig out the air rifle with the steel or copper pellets? (Lead is bad for the environment) Not sure what kind of scope that you should use? They have several interesting You Tube vids about people taking out the rats. JUST my 3.5 cents! I know a varmint will travel looking for food don't know about a migration though. They must have been part of the baby boomers times.
