I'm looking for a good selfbow course. What is the best one to attend? So far, I have seen Pine Hollow, Echo Archery, Boise Bows and a few others. Which is the most saught after? I'm looking to build my own osage, yew, vine maple, or hickory bows. I've built a few hickory bows in the past, but they didn't turn out the best.
Any advice would be awesome.

Any of those will accomplish what you want to learn. As with any thing else "best" is purely subjective.

Yeah, I guess "best" isn't what I was getting at. I just didn't want to pay the money (often over $1000) and not get much out of it. Just wondering anyone's opinion on any courses.
Are there any on the east coast? Virginia, W. Va, NC, SC? From what I've gathered, most are northwest.

I'm sure all those classes you mention are worth the money if you have it and can justify spending it. Even if I had it I couldn't justify it. There's a lot of good books and videos out there. Lots of them. My 2 favorites are Dean Torges hunting the Osage bow, and Paul comstocks the bent stick. I have a DVD by James Easter about Osage bows ill loan you if you want. Pm me

For the price of an airline ticket you could probably get a whole bunch of guys to give you a couple days private lessons and send you home with a bow. You would probably have to buy them a nice stave for their trouble and clean up the mess.

Don't know that it is the best but come see us in Tennessee in May, we usually turn out close to 100 bows that week and some of the best self bow folks in the country are there and very willing to help you through the process. Pappy

If you don't mind heat and/humidity head to Marshall MO for MoJAM aka Ozark self-bow jamboree usually held in mid-July. Free camping, free ice and lots of folks that like to help out anyone that wants to build and shoot a wood bow. Lots of materials on hand for sale or barter.
Another bow building jamboree is O-Jam in Oklahoma, haven't been there myself but my friends who have been there say it's great. It's in the spring, IRRC, mid March. Threads on both here and on Primitive Archer.
Pappy's is one that is my bucket list of places to go. Maybe this year.
I'll echo the Bent Stick, Hunting the Osage Bow, and would like to add Jim Hamm's Building and shooting Native American Bows, Arrows and Quivers. All three are on my self along with the Bowyers Bible series.
Still nothing like hands on bow building with some knowledgeable folks lending a helping hand to get you over the rough spots on the first few builds.

The internet is loaded with any answers to questions you might have. Primitive Archery website has the best selfbow bowyer's in the world that are always ready to help. Gary Davis and Mike Yancey both have good build along videos and Dean Torges has an excellent book. Gonna try my best to get out to the Tennessee classic next spring.

Go to Tennessee Classic at Pappys. Camp out for a week, enjoy some of the greatest people you will meet anywhere, and spend as much time building bows that you want. Lots of experienced bowers to help you, and a great 3D shoot to boot. I went for the 1st time last year and it will not be my last. There is also some great videos of past Classics on Utube.

You can't beat Pappy and the folks at the Tennessee Classic. I had the pleasure making the event years ago. A man that didn't know me from Adam spent a day and half instructing me on my first selfbow build. He didn't ask for a thing in return other than "pass it on". I couldn't take the bow on the plane home so Pappy said, "no problem, I'll ship it to you next week". I offered to pay him but he wouldn't accept a dime. He boxed it up and shipped it to me the next week. It hangs on the wall in my office today. I tell that story every chance I get. If you read this Pappy... Thank you. With all the crud and dishonesty in the world today you guys give me faith in the human race.

Pappy is going to have to buy a bigger farm if word keeps getting out on the classic! I agree hands down the best place to go if you want to learn to build bows.

Ive been to the Tn classic 4 times but have had things happen the last couple of years. Pappy and the guys at Twin Oaks are the best. You can learn a lot from them.
