Ok folks. First, I can't post pictures and I got a big 9 point on the 15th. Day before my October vacation. So....I decided to have a little fun today and answer the 35 lb question. Set up in my back yard. Here is my scenario and here are my results. I took 8 seed sacks and filled them with sand. 15 yards for all weapons tested. Weapons in order and results. 1. 223 dpms busted bag...no pent ration 2. 380 sig. Busted bag no pent ration 3. 12 ga. Slug. Busted bag no penetration. 4. 45 caliber rug er pistol. Busted bag no penetration. 5. 44 rem mag cva. Busted bag no penetration. 6. 57lb tomohawk longbow with woodsman head. Shot through bag and arrow was in yard. 7. 35 lb Black rhino longbow. Tipped with zwickey eskimo. Went in bag to the middle of feathers.

This was fun and eye opening. So the answer is absolutely yes. Hunt close. And keep it sharp..

So I have one bag left. Any ideas?

Congrats! Put it in the back of your pickup for winter traction or kids sandbox?

Wish I had one of those slingshot bows to try..

How about the woodsman out of the 35lb bow.

From: Simple Man
Date: 19-Oct-16

I can try it....I don't think the woodsman will have as much penetration as the two blade...but idk...I'm not home right now to try it....good idea....I'm love woodsman elites...I'm switched from two blade and my blood trails are a lot better....but my guess is two blade has less resistance in the sand.

Either way....you guys should try it for fun....we all know the bullets fragment and destroy quickly...sand or water etc....but this shows what a sharp arrow can do...I had both shaving sharp....

A 1961 Army video comparing the penetration of a .45, the 30 carbine and the M1 Garand to an arrow fired from a recurve bow.

Well, that didn't work.

Search this in you tube or Google: Penetrating Power of Bow & Arrow vs Firearms 1961 US Army Special Forces, from "Silent Warriors"

might as well shoot a 650 grain arrow out of the 35 pounder while your at it and solve the speed vs. momentum debate. Lol. In all seriousness I appreciate the people who take time to experiment thanks.

That video is awsome....I had no idea...super cool....wow...same thing....wish I had Devided compartments in my bag to see where each bullet hit.....so this is what I have come to....you guys would just have to come to your own conclusion....I'd feel confident that 35 lbs would kill a deer...as long as it was scary sharp....I'd think a bone like a rib could really hurt penetration....but who knows....I'd will keep my 57 lbs...I'd think a little more weight as long as your not over bowed is better...but I'd rather hit dead on perfect with less poundage than a marginal shot with more. But I'd rather have more horsepower personally....but 35 can and will kill game....

There used to be a vid as part of IBEP where a feller- Bill wadsworth mebbe, shot milk jugs filled with sand at about 6'. Neither the 30.06 nor the .45 pistol penetrated thru the plastic jugs. A broadhead tipped arrow passed thru both completely. Sure wish I could find that vid....

Id use a 35# hunting bow if it was the last bow on earth, but only then.

Still, Im sure it was fun firing rounds off into the sand all the same!

It was a blast. It was my kids bow. He outgrew it. Any wimps need a 35 lb bow? Just teasn...seriously though...anybody have a need for a beautiful 35 lb rhino.? Great little bows.

Holy smokes guys...all from testing 35lbs for penetration, Simple man was thinking what to do with the last bag wellllll in one of the dukes of hazzard....well a lot of them they blew up stuff by taping a stick of dynamite to the arrow shaft and letting her rip, lol simple man, if you get the dynamite I can get the arrow :)

I'm in. Let's do this.

Holezone....you need to go back and read the thread....nobody said anything about getting shot in chest. The whole post was about bow penetration just for fun. My point was this. 35 lbs penetration well with sharp broadhead. I personally would rather have less poundage and shoot bottle cap sized groups than a lot of poundage and not shoot well. That was it. Don't read into it. And I don't want shot with anything...lol. it's been a big question on here and I was bored. We all know why and how the difference is between firearms and arrows....but overall...it was fun and made me a believer....but I shoot more around 60 lbs. Good to know 40 will do it as I will and am getting older each day. Keep em razor sharp. And aim small. Arrows are lethal.

I remember seeing an article in Field and Steam back in the early 90's where the writer compared penetration from a compound versus a 30-06 shooting into ballistic gelatin. I don't remember the poundage but the bow out penetrated the 30-06. I guess if we really think about it, it makes sense. Most bullets are made to expand and limit penetration and increase shock/trauma.

If you can shoot an arrow through a large sandbag with a 35 pound bow, I'm guessing the same bow would shoot the same arrow through a deer with no problem. Thanks for posting

I still think a stick of dynamite taped to the arrow shaft will work :D I actually have some arrows picked out already, just waiting on the dynamite lol

If you shoot a sheet of plywood with said weapons the bow would be the only one that does not get through ! An animals body is different then sand . I killed many deer with a 39# bow when I was young , it will work , accuracy and shot placement is the key to success . Nice test anyway

A stick of dynamite taped to an arrow. Two things, make sure the fuse is tailing, not leading and use really good tape. It doesn't hut to use a full face motor cycle helmet, sparks. One last little point, duck, bows don't shoot sticks of dynamite taped to arrows near far enough.

where can a feller get a good stick of dynamite these days?
