Came across 72 Bear Kodiak Hunter on Ebay. What kind of string does it take, is it fast flight compatible? Which string would be ideal for this bow, it's a 40 pounder.

I know Bear would say it isn't. Others will disagree.

I shoot B50 endless loop strings on everything, so I don't really push my bows.

Take a look at the overlays on the tips...no question you could use any string you want on that bow

Here's the closeup. What string would be the best, which material, how many strands?

Do you want to use a low stretch material or something else? For a 40lb. bow and B-50 or B-55 I personally use an 8 strand string. No need for mare than 10. Also, I use endless strings so the loops aren't an issue for me.

On my bows i use D97, BCY-X. I have all the modern bows. This is an older bow, so wondering what i need.

I use B50 or B55 on all my vintage Bears. Others use low stretch with good results. Your bow, your choice. I've been satisfied with Dacron.

They tell me you can use FF on any bow you want, doesn't matter. Who ever said you need to be careful doesn't know what they're talking about. You didn't hear that from me.

So it's 10 or 12 strands of B-50 or B-55?

No need for more than 10 strands on a 40lb. bow. As mentioned, I use 8. The breaking strength per strand on both those materials is 50lbs..

With those Chiclet tips I would use low stretch without hesitation...I like Fury and BCY-X.

Low stretch for me. I use 10 strands of Ultracam on my 1967 Black Hawk. I have a 450 9 strand on my 1970 Carroll's. I have a TS-1 (older string) on my Ol' Buck from the 1940's. And I used a 450 8 strand on a RH 400 Shakespeare from 1959 and it had no tip overlays at all, and was 53#.

Here's the deciding factor; you can believe the rumors and he said, she said stuff, or you can actually try something for yourself. I personally think B-50 is harder on bows than modern material since it vibrates a lot more and is heavier in mass. Now that's not scientific, just based on about 8 years now of using FF on old bows with no breakage. That includes bows with no overlays, and bows about 70 years old. Yeah, I must be lucky.

Steve: Please use the keyword search to read thousands of posts over the years regarding low stretch vs Dacron for vintage bows. You'll have to decide for yourself if its ok.
