On Saturday, I went to a yardsale that had advertised target arrows and a crossbow. By the time I got there, the arrows were long gone, but not the crossbow. Also still there was a bow, a dual shelf static recurve with very pronounced tips. The top limb was covered with what looked like 60 years of masking tape residue. And the only visible ID was this decal, and the writing.....

It's a 1953. The 52 would say patent pending. 54 brought on the working recurves...speaking of the Kodiak and Grizzly. Should be a couple more decals on the limbs with the name and a bear.

The yard sale guy said the bow was "just a wall hanger", that he was afraid to shoot it, so he was getting rid of it. For the price he was asking, I decided that my curiosity was worth it. So, I bought it, and a handful of "kid's bows" strings and some armguards and gloves. I took the bow home that Saturday, and after a Hershey's bar for desert today, I decided to see what might be lurking underneath. This is the first decal uncovered:

And after another hour of scraping with a few old plastic car ice scrapers and a couple of Wendy's plastic knives, this is the final decal I uncovered!

More Goo-Gone, and more scraping revealed the full extent of the bow. The tips....well, there is some separating between the layers, and one tip's small final layer is missing, but, all in all, I don't think she looks too bad....

The battery in my camera crapped out on this final photo, which shows the dual shelf. This was being sold as a "wall hanger"...it probably still is, but at least it will be a "prouder" wall hanger, whose name has not been lost to 60+ years of masking tape residue.
I'm not much of a rebuilder, and this might be a bit more of a project than I can handle.
But...it may just be worthy of a little bit of time, effort and experimenting, as the autumn leaves start falling, and the cold creeps in.
The basement is somewhat warm, so if I do, that's where I'll start!
Just figured that after reading the threads talking about the old dual shelf Grizzlys, I thought it rather neat, and ironic, to find one!!
(Once the camera recharges, I'll try to take some photos of the tips....)

George, thank you for the details and year! I figured you'd mosey along, and give some info!
Runner: I've come across many bows with masking tape all over them, and sometimes versions of duct tape. The owners have all said that they used the tape to make the bows less shiny, rather than painting them. They've said that they'd just remove the tape when they were done hunting for the season.
Well, the bows I've come across have looked like they were put away, and forgotten! At least this old Bear Grizzly was not spray painted, or painted with left-over house paints, like a few others I've worked on!!!

I'll take photos of the tips tomorrow and post. I use an old digital camera, with rechargeable batteries. It "died" as I was getting ready to photo the tips......

55 Grizz is my personal fave- still has a bit of that almost "Siyah" look to the static tip, but not the excessively built-up tips of the earlier models. 56 next best, love them both! Smooth, quiet, fast. (Or fast enough for me... :-)

OK, the camera is back and working, so the next 4 photos are of the tips, and some of the nice wood work on them....
THANKS for all the comments and info everyone has offered. And, even the mysterious picture of the artifacts that "jumped my post"!!

Nice contrasting layers, in my opinion, even with all the residue still on them....

If there are angles or views anyone needs, "for further study", just ask. Again, my thanks for the comments and info. ((A friend sent me a PM: saying in effect that now that I have a dual shelf bow, all of my left-hand/right hand and other issues should be fixed!!))
