Just received an Arner longbow today. And it has transformed my thinking that longbows are awkward and slow. I took to this one like a duck to water. Thank you Jim for parting with such a little gem.

Where did you get the idea that longbows were "awkward and slow?" It is pretty well documented that longbows today are very good performers and very maneuverable. Just like they have always been. Some will give good recurves a run for their money.

Past expirence George. Guess I had to get caught up. That's what 35 years of shooting compounds will do to ya. And yes the Arner has 2 or 3 lbs of draw weight on my Tall Tines, but I didn't expect the Arner to keep pace, but it does. Very happy, good luck to all as you take to the woods.

I recently "re found" the longbow as well. I certainly would not refer to most longbows as awkward, however many are by nature slower than recurves of the same poundage. Generally referring to classic style straight or mild r/d designs anyway. When referring to more modern wider limb, hybrid profile longbows however, all bets are off;-) Slight, or even great losses in speed however are often counterbalanced by feel, Pointability and silence. Add to that list the "non finicky" nature of classic deep stack longbow limbs and the slower cousin gains even more favor among some. All a matter of fitting your personal needs and likes, but I really enjoy the freshness afforded by going back and forth.

There is a big difference between a d/r bow and a longbow. Most d/r bows will keep up with recurves. ASL bows not so much.

I have had awkward recurves too.I don't shoot my long now much but when I gave it a fair go it was shooting just about as good as my recurves. If you are a reasonable archer it should just be a matter of familiarising yourself with any particular bow.As I don't have a natural ability that I was born with ,I need to put in a bit of effort to shoot well.Hey that's what it is it's all about for me.It brings me the most enjoyment I can possibably get.Why would you do it if there was no challenge to it.?Its a saying here in Australia that you give people and activities a (FAIR GO). Welcome to our merry band!
There have been many sorts of long bows over 60,000 years, since long before England was an island. The American ones since WWII have been the best so far. No need to call them 'semi'. If a bow is long, curves when drawn into an graceful arc, from which the word archery comes, is not very recurved at the ends, and is made mostly of wood or bamboo, it is probably a longbow.
The design is not quite as efficient as some composite recurves, but it is effective, or civilization might never have arisen. It has been providing food, protection, sport, camaraderie and friendly competition for most of human history.
The compound device is not a bow, it is a machine, sort of a vertical crossbow, a hand held siege engine, a poor substitute for a rifle. Somehow they have encroached on our sport, and our hunting seasons. This may be just a passing fad. In my region most young people shun them in favor of traditional archery.- lbg

I never liked longbows, they seemed stodgy, long and wonky compared to a nice recurve. Now I prefer shooting a longbow. Funny how things change. I guess I'm stodgy and wonky so no wonder I like them.

I just delivered a longbow to somebody who always shot compounds. While shooting it he looked at me and said..."it's pretty fast isn't it"...
not nearly as fast as modern compounds but hardly slow or awkward.

Nice find shatto64! Dale made me one of his Arner hybrid longbows this year. Here's a pic of mine. I love it compared to my recurves for all the same reasons woodshavins pointed out. It shoots the same speed as my high-end recurves only quieter. No stack or handshock. The craftsmanship top notch. And he's a heck of a guy too. Now I want one of his new static tip 50s style recurves!

Seein' if this is turned right side up. BTW had that bow to a 3D shoot today. In less than 48 hrs of shooting it for the first time, I think I shoot it better than the bow I've been shooting all summer. Go figure

Just as a little nitpick in defense of recurves: the average glass r/d longbow is probably more efficient than the average recurve. They do however store less energy. Since the recurve stores more energy, but releases it less efficiently they can be comparable in speed. The recurve however will almost invariably weigh more, which translates into increased steadiness during the hold and loose, which translates into increased accuracy. I still do love longbows. None of us are doing this for ultimate accuracy or we wouldn't be on this site. We all have that in common.
