My son got his first trad kill tonight, a young doe. He's shooting my old MAII...which is older than he is...lol. He's 28, and has a good resume including 2 P&Y whitetails with a compound...but has wanted to shoot sticks for awhile now.

He worked hard with it all summer at the house, and shot a few 3-D's with me...beat me once...lol.

So, he put a great shot on this doe who...of course...expired in the most god awful, gnarly swamp I've seen in some time. This after over 6" of rain last week and 10" since august...boot sucking, mosquito infested total quagmire.

What fun!

Anyway, he was fully amped and is now hooked. I told him, welcome to the brotherhood. I've got my stickbow partner for life now.

Can't beat that, eh?

He called me after the shot...with a little self doubt about the hit. We gave it about an hour, grabbed the lights, and went back out.

Pitch dark night...thick, choking vegetation...she ran through over 40 yards of standing water over shin deep mud. Impossible to blood trail. He cut the trail after she cleared that mess...easily discernible by then and recovered her within 20 yards.

He made a great hit after a lengthy 5 yard shot...lol. It's amazing how they can fly through that mud...I almost lost my boots and it was a REAL struggle to pull my feet outa that stuff.

After donating a goodly amount of blood myself, I'm waiting for the @#$& skeeters to chill out before I get to fired up.

Thanks everybody...yeah, it's a great thing to see "it" pass on to our kids. He tagged along when he was too young to hunt, and loved helping on a bloodtrail.

He was a good hockey player who played through a couple years of college. But he always looked forward to getting back home and hunting & fishing.

His own young son has started with a youth recurve, so we'll keep paying it forward.

And...yeah...it's his Widow now :^)
