Cozy and not to cluttered. What are you shooting this year George?

Good pic George...mine is leaking oil and rattling like hell, but it will be loaded for opening day this Saturday! Speck

From: Babbling Bob Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Wow George, that makes me so jealous.

Had a green 1993 Ford 150xl long bed four by four five speed with camper from 1995 until a little over a year ago (for 20 years). Miss that truck real real bad so your photo is great. Had several folks up here in NY and two in OK offer to buy it. However when I retired, it felt good giving it to a friend I worked with in agriculture research in Oklahoma who on weekends would shoe horses.

From: Knifeguy

Well George, It certainly looks like you've got room for my stuff. I carry about what you do. (Maybe a box of spare arrows the way I've been shooting this last week!) :-) Lance.

From: GlassPowered Hoosier

Shell takes me back. My dad had one on his 77 GMC for a long time. A guy who used to hunt with my brother and I drove a ford with shell. Plus there is just sonething about the look of the bed with a shell over it.

A bit of a pain to take on and off and really don't have a use for one plus we often need the bed open anyway on the farm.

Takes me back though.

Huntin Truck. I got one! 1973 GMC 4X4. Took the original 350 out and put in my Matco Tool Truck one weekend so I could run on Monday. I put the 307 that came out of my 69 Chevelle in the GMC. Started at 2:30 pm on Saturday and backed the tool truck out of shop 5:30 AM Sunday. Went home and slept for 3 hours and went back to shop and put motor in GMC. Finished it by 5:00 PM Sunday evening. That was in my younger days. I was 57 then. lol. My son done the camo paint job on truck with rattle cans using tree branches and leaves for stencils. Turned out real nice when it was fresh. Even got a hay fork in back to hoist up my game like rabbits and doves. Sig9 PS Reminds me I need to put some gas in it for this year. 3 gals. should do it.

Used to do the very same thing with my old Jeep J-10, George! Good times! A couple suggestions for added comfort...cut yourself a piece of carpet pad and carpet as those boxes can be hell on your knees...also, a piece of 2' plywood laid across the rails up front keeps all your gear up and out of the way and gives you a place to make lunch should it rain.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 22-Sep-16

I used to hunt with a fellow down the road who had a 1972 Ford F- 250, 4 wheel drive. That truck would likely have climbed a tree, or at least got half way up. When he sold it, he had guys dang near fighting over it too. It was over 20 years old when he sold it. Every now and then you just find one like that. It may be Ford, Dodge, Chevy or Toyota. I had a 1980 Chevy 1500 two wheel drive back in the early 80's. I loved that truck too. It was a straight 6 and I could sit on the wheel wells and change spark plugs. Can't do that with any today.

Do any of you remember these. 1980 Chevy LUV. Not much of a mountain climber but it gets me to my deer lease. The original 4-banger threw the timing chain into all other parts of the engine so I swapped a 1995 Blazer V6 into it. Nearly tripled my Horsepower.

I'm laughing all the way to the bank about "old trucks." I bought a 2001 Chevy 4x4 new, and it now has over 270,000 miles on it and all I've ever done besides oil and change the tranny fluid is put in two water pumps and a fuel pump. And I'm a Ford guy! Mine's got a camper shell, too, George. My all time favorites were the old straight six Ford 300 ci with manual transmissions. Lugged well, not enough power to get into any real trouble, and just kept on chugging along. Two of them had well over 200,000 miles on them, too. In this era of transparency, I did just buy a new 2016 Ford 150. It will be a good many years before it gets off the road...

I would much rather drive my truck than any car. Have had 2 Silverado Z71s and the ride is like a luxury car, but without the feeling that my butt is almost touching the road. Plus it pulls my camper and bass boat. Hope the guys that like cars and SUVs never have to bring home a dog that's been sprayed by a skunk. MP

These newer vehicles have a fuel pump that is kept cool by the gas in the tank..When you run less than a quarter a tank of gas in them you risk burning out the fuel pump..And when it quits you in heavy traffic you can be run over and killed..Learned this the hard way..After spending around $500 for a new pump..When they quit you better hope you are on a country road..On an Interstate you will end up dead..Keep that gas above a quarter of a tank.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 24-Sep-16

A quarter of a tank on my Silverado is 8 gallons. It has a 34 gallon reservoir. I rarely let it get lower than 1/2 a tank anyway. I don't like the bill to fill that tank from near empty.

I like Larry's truck best. It'll start every morning and can find its way home on the darkest of nights or heaviest of snowstorms. And you never get locked out or worry much about oncoming traffic. It will often see the deer before you do and sometimes let you know if a bear's been in the huckleberries. It has a smooth ride, can turn on a dime, and comes with a true lifetime warranty. I' haven't sent one to the junk yard yet, but I have buried a few. Never done that with my Fords, Chevies, or Dodges, but thought about it once with a VW camper.

Traction is about tire style more than what brand vehicle you drive. You will see that in those extreme 4 wheelin shows. It's all about clearance and tire design. I don't go into nasty spots any more, but I had an old 65 Jeep Cherokee, back in the mid 70's, that got me in and out of some iffy spots back across the lake at Mt. Storm, West Virginia.

It's one of the least capable 4x4's I've had but it's ok as as a city truck. Lots of known issues and a few recalls GM didn't want to deal with on those trucks.

Got a 2012 4x4 Tundra double cab last March after 25 years with my trusty Toyota Dlx 4x4.Just hope it handles the winter roads as well.Probably not though being so much bigger.

Bernie, my Silverado is not a small truck but I've been on a lot of roads with it from small mountain trams, to turnpike. Never one single issue as long as I didn't get stupid and drive too fast. I suspect that Tundra will do great....they are awesome trucks. I like those FJ's too, just never owned one.

George I looked at the FJ when they first came out.All reports say they are excellent off roaders-OK on pavement.Only thing I didnt like was the serious lack of visability.Beyond my comfort zone.

Yeah, I just thought they looked cool. I really don't do much "offroading" since around these parts it would be mostly illegal. We have 112 acres of mountain farm and about 1/2 an acre of that is flat. We have some roads there we travel to keep cleaned out for fall wood gathering, cutting short a deer drag, etc. Any 4 wheel drive with ground clearance, and low range works there. We're pretty well covered; my buddy has a Ford, my brother-in-law has a Jeep CJ, and my daughter's boyfriend has a Dodge. I also have a 99 Jeep Cherokee...my wife's winter work vehicle. They are are great vehicles.

Can't post the photo for some reason, but my rig is a base model 2005 Silverado regular cab 1/2 ton short bed 4x4. It has the 4.8 V8 and has only 61000 miles. I had the same set up on a 2004 Sierra longbed and sold it with 187000 miles 4 years ago and I still see it on the road occasionally. Put a fiberglass cap on it this past spring to keep my gear out of the weather. Decent gas mileage, pulls my 18' trailer with my little Kubota tractor, 4 wheel drive, I and can sleep in the back, cheap insurance and it's mine! All a fellar could ask for!

Some pretty good looking rides here. I'm in. Had it 13 years. 290k on the first engine. Bought it in college. 10 years of marriage and 3 children later still got her.

Thanks Kurt. I rescued That old 4x4 out of an alley in downtown Jackson,MS of all places.Lol Im trying to build a gnarly front bumper with a winch and add a few LED lights on the headache rack along with some wooden side walls to keep my gear in place.
