Whats the best leather in your opinion or the most used for long bow grip wrap. I want to sew one around my long bow grip

Since I'm a leathercrafter: anything I could probably get working. They do make a heat srink plastic for moulding now, pretty cool stuff. Lost of handgun holster makers are using it.

I'd say 5-6 oz leather would be good to answer the question.

4 may be more to your liking...

I put deer leather on most of my grips. Deer leather is very stretchy and easily conforms to locator grips and such, and it's quite durable too. Check it, it has more stretch sideways than it does longways. Deer leather can be bought in a multitude of colors. Check the big auction site for starters.

Thanks Jeff. My bows are locator grips with a medium wrist. How difficult is it to get a good fit? Do you stitch yours on the back of the grip?

Yes, I generally stitch them with artificial sinew. No holes need punched first, I just do a baseball stitch with two big needles.

It's not hard to get a good fit. Start a little big, and alternately, gently pull it down into the curves and trim it until you're happy with it. After it's all fitted up, and just before I start sewing, I spray the inside of the leather with 3M spray adhesive to ensure it never moves.

I used a scrape of veg tan leather I had. I say it is 4oz. I soaked it in water and stretched around grip. Used spring to hold in place. When dry I trimmed and punched holes. Then used Barge cement to secure it to riser. The stitching holds it all together. I was pleased with this first time attempt.

What type of leather is on the kodiak? That's a comfortable grip.

If you have a piece of leather, pull on it to feel any stretch. Then turn it 90 degrees and tug it again. The grain in leather allows stretch in one direction but no so much perpendicular to that. Make sure the stretch runs left/right, not up and down. The thicker it is, the less you can feel it stretch. I have used upholstery samples as grip leather. Lots of colors to be had that way.

X2 what Bud said. I also use upholstery leathers.....fairly thin and conforms well to shaped grips.

I use the upholstery leather like dresser and just used M60's hot water soak method and it works like a charm! I ran the stretchier side up and down and it just layer right down. It's on a med. wrist super grizzly handle,,,,,patiently waiting for it to dry :>|

I tried something different when I refinished my bow. When it came time to put a leather grip back on the bow, I wanted suede, not the smooth, thin leather that was used originally. I used double-sided 3M tape(thin, not thick). Ran the strips vertically on the grip, all the way around.. Then I bought a roll of suede leather lacing, not the thick, Latigo type, this is a medium thickness. From the start of wrapping around the grip, it conformed easily, stayed in place, and I could wrap it tightly. It stays in place, I like this way the best. I like the old school leather wrap with no lacing.
