Wondering what have you done for a special kind of hunt that was all your doing, no outfitters.

All of them were DYI, except for one 15 mile back country hunt up Specimen Ridge on the north boundary of Yellowstone Park. And out of six hunters, the only thing taken was a bighorn ram. And NO - ZERO elk were seen. A lot of money for a great camping trip. So never again will I go with an outfitter unless mandatory, ie. moose or something in Africa. The best DYI was a 8 day caribou trip to hunt the Mulchatna herd in the Lake Clark area. Did a lot of camping/hunting trips in Indian Heaven wilderness in WA. A lot of camping trips bowhunting elk in Spanish Peaks, Montana. Set up a wall tent camp alone and had two buddies travel from NY to hunt Sage creek Montana for 8 days. That was another great hunt.

Pretty much most of them, but I think some of the funnest are combined bear hunts with walleye fishing and/or grouse hunting. Been on my last DIY moose hunt though...after 6 I can tell you they are NOT the stupid slobbering swamp donkeys that you so often hear about aimlessly wandering through camp while you chop wood, not for me anyway! More like the most frustrating animal on earth to kill!

I've never hunted with an outfitter in my life actually. One of the best trips that I ever made was an extended trip in the George Washington National Forest in Virginia.

Been hunting out west for nearly 30 years, all DIY, except for the past few when my hunting partner and I have had our gear packed in. We still walk in.

Otherwise, our procedure is to set up a wall tent on the side or end of a two-track, and hunt from there, sometimes packing a spike camp in a little further. More recently, we just carried a lighter, smaller tent and backpacked in right from the start. Hunted several states this way-- Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and North Dakota.

We're both 70 now and the packs are getting a bit heavy. That's why we've hired an outfitter to take our equipment in. We still use all our own equipment. It's better and more versatile than most outfitters have.

Public land in Kentucky. To me it doesn't get any better.

Northern Quebec Caribou Hunt. Back when the rates were reasonable. Fly in drop camp, cut own wood, cook own meals, hunt when I wanted to hunt, fish when I wanted to fish! Best I have ever ate in my life.

All DIY, don't like to travel much, I feel I'd be missing something where I normally go. Not against it , just never bothered. Now day trips are another story.

I've done nothing but diy hunts for 51 years except 1 bear hunt. I've been lucky and gotten into game every hunt. First thing you gotta do is forget what people tell you about where to find elk. Elk are where you find them. Second is don't waste a week hunting one mountain if ur not seeing fresh sign. My favorite trophy elk hunting areas are now drawing only areas with you needing maxed out pref points. Now a days I don't do drawings except where its first come first served like Montana. For young people I tell em to start working on areas 12 , 2 , or 201 in the northwest corner of Colorado. 12 has alot more public land than the others tho, so that would be my pick. It'll take ya about 20 years to get drawn but if you start now you can hunt other places till ur drawn. And trust me it's worth the wait. When I hunted 12 all of Colorado was otc for archery. There's more large bulls on public land than anywhere else I've seen.

The only dyi I wouldn't do again was for caribou. We were almost as far north as Shefferville. We drove bulldozer paths for hundreds of miles with nothing along the way but a few gas stops. By the time we got home it took a long time to get all the rattles and problems out of our vehicle.

Pretty much all DIY since 1984 or so.

I've taken a lot of folks hunting, but only last year did I have someone finally take ME hunting for the first time in my life. LOL.

Best DIY hunt by far has been my trip last year to Colorado for elk. Getting ready to leave for my next elk hunt, and I hate myself for waiting so long to go.

Some of my most memorable DIY hunts were with my brother in West Texas in the 90's. We had no idea what we were doing, but we had a blast anyway.

All DIY, including moose, bighorn and mountain goat. The mountain goat hunt was my most memorable adventure.
