So did this year grizzly have both the brass and the silver coin? I have one that is gold, but just bought one that is being shipped out that looks like it may be silver. Just curious. I read one article that said after 65 was when the silver started, and another that said that some in 65 had them.

Unless this is brass and it's just been scratched up a little, after zooming on the pic a little. If that's the case, is it hard to find another brass to replace?

looks like that is the finish on the bow that has yellowed with age, not the coin.

I thought the zebrawoods had a silver medalion....
And I thought Bear didn't finish over their medalions, my KH doesn't have finish over it.
Maybe the bow was refinished before and that is yellowing. I'd just try to carefully clean up the medallion without affecting the finish on the wood.
I personally like yellowed finish on the Grayling bows. They just look right that way.

Well on that bow in the pic I believe that's right that someone tried spraying something over and it has yellowed. Bit the 65 I have of my uncles that he bought new in 65 for sure has the gold medallion. So I don't know what is correct as far as that. When I get the bow I'm and going to do a complete refinish to make her all pretty lol. Hopefully I can figure out what's the correct one to be in there and find one if the one that's in it isn't correct. My uncles has never been refinished and looks like the day he bought it. I want them to look good together ha ha.

To my knowledge the medalion is right. Its aluminum and it was put ibto bows at the zebrawood time.
Just google search "zebrawood grizzly" and "bear archery medalion". Too bad I don't have acess to a catalog to proove to you but I've seen other zebrawoods with the flush aluminum medalion.
If you think about it the silver color makes it pop compared to brass. Bear did it for a reason...

The one on the bow looks aluminum to me. It looks like it got some kind of varnish or polyurethane on it.

In a few different places I've read that medallions can be different in the same year, and not reliable as a way of dating bows.

I've had plenty of bear bows from the '60's that had finish over the coin. That's what that one has, aluminum coin with yellowed finish.

Coins are just a decent estimation.
They were in a bin. If they got low and found an old one they would use it.

This is the one I have from my Uncle, Also a 65, would you say that is finish on top that has aged as well? There is one little scrap on it that looks like it might be silver.

Have a '60 K Special with a copper medallion so it would be an early '60 I would suppose. The medallion looks like the one on my '59 K Special.

I just buy bows without worrying about the coin...my new 1962 Kodiak Magnum has a gold coin...my 1961 Kodiak has a pewter coin...3 of my 4 1960 Kodiaks have copper coins while the other has an aluminum...bowyers just grabbed whatever they had handy...remember they built bows for hunters, not for collectors

I have a '64 Zebrawood and mine is just like the original post. Finish has yellowed and is starting to flake of the coin. I am pretty sure mine is original finish. Good info to know from the guys who posted the pic/dates of the Bear coins. Thanks

I agree with DDave..coins are at best a guesstimation. note- they're pretty easy to swap out so don't put too much emphasis on them.

Logical the finish would go over the coin. Taking time to carefully scrape finish buildup on the edges of the coin mortise? Nah I'm guessing no.

As far as the clinic it was more of a curiosity thing more than anything. It not an issue was just curious. Again as others have said thanks for those with date help.

The coins were painted over many times. The medallions (raised plastic) were not. I think it may have differed also later in manufacturing, but not sure on the years. I have had many Bears with coins that had finish over them.
