I got to meet him when he was 81, I think that was his age, and he signed his field notes book, for me, which I just cherished....... found out he was coming to west town archery in Milwaukee, back in the day, showed up, and in he came, with friends..... he was quite tall, very gentle of a man, and he told stories, at the store,,,,,, I will never forget that......

I had known Art LaHa, and was lucky to be at his bear camps, but I never thought I would meet Fred Bear

also great posts and thanks for sharing,,,,,

It really surprises me that more of the older guys didn't go meet him. In the old days he was pretty busy signing stuff. But in the late 70's and early 80's he signed few bows and then just sat watching the people walk by. My wife and myself used to go to where ever he was gonna be just to sit n spend hours talking to him. He loved telling hunting stories and also listening to others stories. I seriously don't believe the man ever met stranger. Last time I talked to him was in 82. I had a chance to go after that but didn't go. Sure wish I had.

I wish I could have met Fred. I have the DVD set of the films, and watch them again often.
