anyone use tru oil gun stock finish on arrows?

I haven't used it in a while but Im redoing my bow and am impressed with the finish.

Just wondering how it wears.

I have used it before. I used it on the lower part of arrow. I cap dip and crest. I used a soft cloth to apply and steel wooled in three coats. Like you I had extra from another project. What I liked about it is when it got worn on the point end of the targets I just steel wooled and applied another coat in that area.

It isn't durable enough for me

David is it not as hard as poly?

What do you use?

I use poly at about 5 coats. It would take a lot of Tru oil to get to that thickness. The poly is bullet proof and I never have runs with it. I use Tru oil for some refinishing but tend to use poly for everything nowadays.

Woodcraft stores sell a wipe-on poly called "General Finish". I just refinished my HH Big 5 with it and I highly recommend it for a bow. I will try it on some arrows eventually.

True-oil I way harder than poly, its a tung oil material, with hardener's. But way too expensive for use on arrow shafts. Try Daly's Pro-fin, its essentially the same thing. Bob

Alternate between Armour all and True Oil. It makes the oil harden.

I think hard is part of the problem. I can scrape Tru oil off with my finger nail but poly tends to flex with the wood on arrow in arrow hits or glancing blows. Even if money were not an issue I'd still use poly.

My concern with tru oil or any finish is whether the feathers will stick to it.

I use tru oil for shafts and duco for feathers, works great for me.

Agree with Bob. HOWEVER, I have truoiled a few and it is a real nice arrow finish for sure. As nice as a truoiled gunstock after three coats. No plasticy poly residue or feel.
