so I just got some new broadheads from steelforce. musleheads. I was thinking whats the best setup to test for penatration? they are brand new so im thinking this is the best chance to test this out, Its a great chance to test my setup to see what penetrations I should get with my setups at differt ranges. yew I know there are to many varablies. something simple and cheap would be goodalso hom much penatration should I get thanks guys.

Cinder block or wood? Best is an animal I think. That's how I test but then its also subject to the variables.LOL

Penatration has to many variables like the angle of shot, sharpness of head, weight of bow just to name a few. Distance on the shot. See what I mean. These are all variables to consider.

Pork butt or picnic's. Picnic's have shoulder blade and a bit of the front leg. On to the smoker after testing ;)

Picnics also have skin on them.

You're joking right? I've been involved in this stuff for 40 years and that's a new one on me.

If your referring too me, not joking. I've never killed an animal made of cinder block or wood. I know some of you old bastards are set in your ways, but think outside the box sometime.

I would just shoot a phone book or something like that,, cheap and easy,, and won't ruin your head,, I have pretty much shot everything with a broached sometimes by accident,,, rocks and such,,,,, a tree is a good test, you will have to spend alot of time digging it out,, :)

I'm kind of referring to several of the suggestions. And yes we "old bastards" (you may be surprised how old many of us "old bastards" aren't, but that another conversation).

I would do exactly what Brad suggested. Use an old phonebook, compressed foam, something of that sort. Much cheaper, much easier on broadheads, and just as relevant.

First, I don't really care to test penetration. I know what I use works if I do my part. If I don't it won't.

Second, if I did want to test the parameters Rick Barbee has set up is as good as I have seen for consistency. I would certainly use them.

What setup are you using? I test broadheads for durability as much penetration.

I shouldn't type anything if I don't have an answer for you. But I want to add my 2 cents anyway, I had to go backward to move forward. Meaning I went from glass to self bows. That is when I REALLY learned what mattered and what didn't. Sharp and spinning true is the only test broad heads need done. I've used at least a half dozen or more heads over the years and couldn't tell you which is better or worse. They all killed critters in a hurry. Short and wide, long and narrow, single bevel and double bevel.

I think boredom drives a lot of these things. I don't get bored with my gear anymore, which only prompted money spending and hair splitting and often headaches. If I do get bored? I build another bow or make some arrows.

What are you gonna hunt? If elk or moose, some concern is understandable. If, like myself, you're stricly a deer hunter, it's all much ado about nothing.

Sharp, tuned, adequate hunting weight...no problems.

Oh, I agree...that stuff keeps the game fun. In fact, this very subject got me switched to single bevel 2 blade Grizzlies...just for the possible "bone factor".

My point was, for a fairly thin skinned critter such as a whitetail, we can kinda over think it at times.

But, to each his own, eh?

Seriously?

Obvious answer? No one?

4Nolz? I think that the conclusion from another thread, was that DEAD COWS should be left alone. They get RIGHT SMELLY when messed with! Just my 3 cents Batman

You haven't changed much the last few years Mike,, I like it. lol

I never knew they existed, so I checked them out from there web sight, they only come in 100g, I noticed that the main blade may need a quick hone at the tip . I believe that they should be checked to see how they fly first . As they are cut on contact they should penetrate as expected . let us know how they work out.
