Can folks post their suggestions of the best elk calling DVDs or CDs helped them learn the wapiti language? The past few years I've had some close encounters and been amongst the elk, but I'm unsure of what they are actually saying and as a result, unknowing of how to respond. I've heard many times from experienced hunters that less is more, that not calling/bugeling is better than calling too much. But that doesn't help me understand what the elk are communicating and as a result what my actions should be. Thanks!

I don't have the DVDs, but I attended one of Joel Turners seminars on elk calling. He knows his stuff and explains when and why to make certain calls, and how to make them. He gives good advice on 2-man setups, set-ups on ridge lines...etc

I like Elknuts. A four disc set to go with his playbook. I also like Lapinski's "radical elk hunting".

You don't need to buy a DVD, just go to youtube.com and type in elk calling. You will have plenty to look over.

I learned 25 years ago by following the directions printed on the package of a Lohmancow call. Bulls come to It like cats to catnip.
You can worry too much about what they are saying. Just go with cow in heat, don't overdo it and don't get too sharp and quick paced. A lot of beginners let their calls get too much like alarm chirps.

Joel Turner's DVD is the best I've seen for big bulls. Elk Nut's DVDs are also excellent, get 'em all they will really make you an expert, but Joe's specialty method is the best for a single method.

I've watched several you tube videos and they cover the basics of how to use a mouth diaphragm and bugle and such but they don't go into much detail about elk speak, and what the critters are communicating. Most of the guys that are good that have videos out there are trying to make some money at it buy selling DVDs and such. I'm just trying to get better.

It's easy to over think this!
I've called bulls and talked to bulls that would come in last in a calling contest. The biggest bull I ever called came in making odd squeaky sounds. My partner was sure it was a camp robber.

There's more to calling elk than just sounding like them. You have to know how to setup and use the terrain in your favor and also use how the animals are acting against them.

Elknut's stuff is great. I'm also really liking Elk 101's elk university. It's very well done.
