Hey all,

I'd like for you all to take a minute or 2 and think about this.

If you were given the opportunity to get a new recurve right now, what would it be and why?

I have a bit of conflict on this right now. Up until a few days ago if someone asked me that question I would've answered pretty quickly a BEAR TakeDown. I have wanted one since seeing the rosewood/zebra model on the cover of a Bear Catalog MANY years ago. To me the Bear TD Recurve is my DREAM BOW.

A few days ago I went to the Lancaster Archery site to nose around. I went to the ILF section as I have a Morrison 17" aluminum ILF riser that I like a lot. I wanted to see what was new. I came upon a new bow from Win & Win called the BLACK WOLF. Oh my! What an incredibly cool bow that is. I watched a review by Merlin (in England) and he talked what an incredible piece of gear it is. Arrow after arrow right on top of each other. He talked about almost no vibration, no feel in his hand from the bow and virtually silent. He did end up saying that no matter how great that bow was, he still preferred his Hoyt Buffalo. Not me. I'll take that Black Wolf.

I think that Black Wolf sells for either $799. The Bear TD sells for about $799 or so. Here's the info on the Black Wolf in case you haven't seen it yet. It's an all carbon riser and limbs.

OK...so what recurve would you pick? If you are lucky enough to have the Recurve of your dreams....please post a pic of it so the rest of us can also enjoy your bow too. Even if you don't have it yet, post a pic.

So many wonderful bows out there these days. I don't know enough about what all is out there for us so post up guys...and gals.

Thanks for your time.

Already have it; WhippenStick take down Phoenix. 60" and made to my specs...52lb at 29", coco limb veneers and bacote centered on coco on the riser.

Quiet, smooth, FAST, and the most amazing workmanship I've ever seen on any bow.

It doesn't hurt that Ken's the nicest guy to deal with...and shoot with...you could meet.

I ordered his RD longbow last December after shooting from a selection. Same-same with that!

Maddog retro. I have one already. To me, it is the perfect bow. Shoots where I look. Light and trim in the hand. Quiet and super fast. Grip was built to my request. Sight window was built to my request. I love it!!!!!!!! God Bless

Hate to burst your bubble Nalajr but it isn't the bow that makes the archer it's the archer that makes the best of his/her bow. There is no "Magic" bow. It matters not if it's a simple stick and string, or the latest bow-like, arrow launching gizmo. It's practice, practice, practice, put the bow and arrows to bed, go to bed, get up the next morning and practice, practice, practice. I've been at this game for more years than I care to mention I still miss the dot more than I hit the dot I've called the arrows every name in the book although deep down I know it's me and not the arrows I think that at last I'm getting consistant enough to take some pride in my shooting. Sure, good equipment helps but in the end it's the archer that should get the blame or the praise for the score or the game. The equipment used is just a means to an end There is no Magic bow or unerring arrow!

I'm still on the lookout for a York Constellation. A little out of the LW mainstream, but would be a great add to my collection of tournament bows.

I don't have a photo of one - I think the Archery History archives might. But I might as well help feed some else's fantasy. Aaron's and Frank's, for example. This one is not quite 50#, but with that massive overdraw shelf, you could crank it up!

I think the Groves Spitfire Prestige Hunter is not too common - this one punches arrows into the bale pretty well.

I have owned so many recurves over the years it's difficult for me to remember until someone says "what about XXXX?" and then I remember I had one (or two, three...).

I'm actually regressing. Rather than another of today's beauties I'm more into old bows. My go-to bow is a Bear takedown, either green stripe or newer two-tone A handle. But there are a lot of bows out there that I wouldn't mind having another of - an early/mid 60s Howatt Hunter or an early 70's Super Diablo are among the top contenders.

Hey Nalajr, I've bought and swapped a few bows in the last 20 years or so. No custom bows just made for me, but quite a few production bows and some customs made for others. Only one clunker, a cheaply made longbow that would rattle your teeth. The best ones are the ones I'd bought directly from the man who shot or hunted with for years. The last one was a Hoyt Pro Medalist Hunter, 55# and 62"(top bow). I promised him I would hunt it this year and share my success (or story) to him. I bought a bow and made a friend. He can't hunt with it anymore, so when I hold the bow, it's like shaking his hand. There's a lot to be said for that. Good luck!

My PMA X is a great do-it-all bow. 62" long 56@29. High mass weight so steady on the target and dead after the shot. I shoot 3D and hunt with it. To me it's silly to use a short bow in the name of maneuverability UNLESS it shoots every bit as well as a longer bow...I hunt out of an old man climber sometimes and shot three critters out of it last season...anyone familiar with an old man knows if you can shoot out of an old man that's plenty maneuverable.

Boy that HIGH SIERRA and the Desert Bighorn are really beautiful!!

I find my tastes these days going to those bows that have nice streamlined shapes without the blockiness that many recurves tend to have. I like a sleek looking bow. Look how streamlined that High Sierra looks. That's what I am fond of right now.

I like my Morrison and it's the best recurve I've ever owned by a mile. It's an ILF bow which I must have. Because of my back. I love having the capability to back it off or crank it up a couple turns if I need to.

My problem is that I need a really nice set of limbs to go on it to take advantage of the riser. I have a set of KAP Challenger Carbon limbs at 32 pounds. I need something better, quicker, more modern that has more performance built in.

Anyway, gorgeous bows guys. Thanks all for responding.

From: picapica

Of the three, Black Wolf, Hoyt Buffalo, Bear takedown; I'd lean toward the Bear Takedown initially simply for asthetic reasons.

After pondering the limb attachment systems and limb interchangability, I would decide on the ILF.

I would then probably choose the Hoyt Buffalo with wood limbs for the look, feel, and reviews.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Not interested in any new bows, they tend to all look alike anyway, save for the differences in fancy riser and limb woods. I'd probably opt to find a nice 57 Kodiak just to carry in the hunting woods every year. They shoot as well as any modern bow, and are light and maneuverable in the field. I've owned a lot of bows over the years and still prefer the vintage ilk.

the only ones I would be interested in today are the two I sold several years ago, bad decision I needed the money. Shafer Silver Ghost 62" and 70# @ 28" (upper limb was damaged in an accident just 1 week before I left for a hunt and Paul replaced them) the other was a Rocky Mountain recurve 56" and 66# @ 26 1/2" I would buy them back if I found them.

Journeyman Recurve, the one that got away. Although I have a twin (different wood) I wish I'd kept this one. These days all I shoot is my Black Widow PLX Longbow but the Journeyman Recurves are very special bows.

A Great Northern Ghost recurve 60#@28. I had one before and I loved it. I went through a rough patch(one of many on my life)and sold it to pay the rent. I have kicked myself more than once for doing it. I have sold a lot of my bows in the past; but that's the only one I deeply regret.

Anything but an Eaglewing would be a Fox High Sierra or a Bigfoot SS.

In a recurve, I'd want an older bow. Probably the original 55" Deathmaster in 45 pound pull. I'm not going to find one, so I'd get a Bear magnesium A riser, red, with 45 pound #1 limbs and #2 grip.

I probably have my one bow and that would be my Border Black Douglas. It has the Hex 6.7H limbs, it shoots fast and better than me. Ha. Seriously it is a great looking bow and as fine a shooter as I have had. I shoot others well but this just a bit better.

If I could get a set of the new Hex 8H limbs for it I suppose that would be about all I would wish for but I think that new limb development is just on the CH model. Not sure, have not kept up with it.

Hard to choose, I have always hunted with my Black Widow but this year I think I am giving the Border a chance to hunt.

Old thread, but I thought it interesting I said, back in 2016, I'd want a Beat mag TD with A riser and #1 limbs. Little did I realize I'd end up trading for that bow but with the wooden riser!

In a Recurve it would be the bow I have , Hoyt Satori. Or a Palmer , never owned one but have shot a few and they are really nice.
