strange bow at hand currently . would like some to identify it if possible. It has a very heavy metal riser, and was obviously a target bow, with early sights etc, but also has paper taped on lower riser section with small colored pins protruding through.Unfortunately it also has a cracked limb.

Yup, Carroll. I believe that riser will also fit Wing Presentation limbs.

Looks like "old age" with a cracked riser too! Resembles my age and condition!

the riser itself is not cracked. That section on lower part of riser is just a piece of stiff paper that was taped onto riser with a series of colored pins protruding through, and is coming away from the riser..Must have bee used as some adjunct to sighting mechanism.

It looks to me as if it might have been a response to Ernie Root's Golden Eagle bow, which is often considered the first successful metal riser target takedown bow. Root's bow made the first several perfect 300 indoor scores in 1967. It's riser was cast aluminum and featured a very slim metal grip area intended to reduce bow torqueing. It was my first really good bow and was very comfortable in the hand. - lbg

I don't think that's a Carrolls. Neither the limb butts, the grip nor the arrow shelf look like any Carrolls I've ever seen, and I have half a dozen of them...but I could be wrong. If you can, post some close-up pics of the limb tips from both the belly and back...that will help us make a better determination. I agree with longbowguy...that bow has Ernie Root written all over it.

Either that, or it's an Astro, which, now that I think of it, is a better bet.

joep003 I will do some shots tomorrow of the tips but I can say they do have overlays over limb glass.

Definitely not a Carrolls, and I've never seen an Astro takedown with that shape tip overlays...Astros were more flat/blunt. Those overlays are reminiscent of America Archery overlays, but I've never seen a metal riser American Archery takedown.
