I hate to open a can of worms but what do you think of a National Championship that does not require double scoring to help prevent cheating? I have heard stories for years about a guy who wins frequently there, Cloverdale, but when he shoots at other big shoots he shoots much worse. I have been told that many of those who have World Titles won't shoot there because of this. Opinions?

From: SteveBNY
Date: 24-Jun-16

Credible competitions have double scoring and busted groups. Otherwise is is a fun shoot - which is perfectly OK.

From: Ranger
Date: 24-Jun-16

Cloverdale should require it too. Like to see it in the future.

No one is ever really a champion of anything, anyone can and will be beaten by someone! Just relax and enjoy the moment.

From: JusPassin Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Never been a bronc that couldn't be rode, never been a 'poke that couldn't be throwed.

On a good day you can't be beat, and on a bad day you can't beat anyone.

I will score mine come September or October.

From: HillbillyKing Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 25-Jun-16

No one takes the scores there seriously i know one guy that won twice who couldnt beat my nephew if he didnt cheat we caught another one who won sevearal times we know he cheated when they shoot alone and win WELL this is probley why attendance dropped drasticly there when all this could be easeily fixed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From: tradarcherychamp
Date: 25-Jun-16

If you are that concerned with your shooting versus others then stick to asa or ibo shoots. If you want to have a good time on an excellent course set up in beautiful woods, then go to cloverdale.

From: TD2 Professional Bowhunters Society - Associate Member

Just work on improving YOUR score. Don't worry about anyone else's. Not like on reasreaslly win anything anyway

From: HillbillyKing Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 26-Jun-16

Then dont call the shoot the Nationals its a JOKE !!!

From: Sipsey River
Date: 26-Jun-16

HillbillyKing said it right. It is the Nationals. A person winning a National Championship should be the best shooter, not the guy with the sharpest pencil.

Yup and maby alot more will quit comieng too the cheaters fest too i did a few years back !!!

From: David Mitchell Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

I love Cloverdale and have been there 27 of the 29 years of the shoot. If you just go and enjoy it without a negative attitude, you'll never find a nicer 3D range and good folks. Julia (tradarcherchamp)said it well. If scoring is your big thing go to Cloverdale to practice and have fun, and then hit the ASA and IBO circuit.

From: HillbillyKing Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 26-Jun-16

Theres good courses everywhere and myself i doubt i ever win but when i look at results and see the ones i know cheated on up the list This is an easy fix why not just do it ? And for whatever reason we go everyone will be satisfied wth their experince at the cloverdale NATIONALS !!!

From: HillbillyKing Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 26-Jun-16

After all Its not called the practice nationals now is it !

From: Danny Pyle
Date: 26-Jun-16

If you have proof someone is cheating why not report it to the ones running the shoot? I would hate to see it become so serious that you wouldn't be able to shoot with friends.

From: Ranger
Date: 26-Jun-16

So, who cheated?

From: Sipsey River
Date: 26-Jun-16

Putting out a person's name on this public site can cause a lot of problems. Most men who have been beaten by him and have later shot against him one on one and see how bad he really shoots know who he is. I saw the guy in a shoot off recently. There were 5 targets in the shoot off, he had a miss and 4 fives! 2 of the 5 shots were under 20 yards, the 3 other were less than 25. It is a shame that one guy can discolor such well set up and a great event, especially when a national title results.

From: Antlerart
Date: 01-Jul-16

looks like we'll have to wait till next year to get this years results and attedance numbers. ol'well !!

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

Those of you who say "just shoot" must be okay with a cheater doing his own thing. Rules are there for a reason, and that's to level the playing field. You would likely think differently if the same happened to your kids. Beaten by a cheater and allowing that to be condoned by the club is why folks quit attending those shoots. It's not about losing in a fair tournament, it's about a cheater being allowed to cheat when a correction to the program would eliminate that. Pretty simple really. If that's allowed to fester than the shoot is ultimately doomed, and the term Nationals is a joke. By the way, I don't go there and I have no dog in the hunt, but right is right, and wrong is wrong.

CHET TOLD ME HE WON!

From: JusPassin Compton's Traditional Bowhunters

If they still score the hear/lung area together like they did years back the title is pointless anyway. Can't be compared to nearly any other event.

"If they still score the hear/lung area together like they did years back the title is pointless anyway. Can't be compared to nearly any other event."

I think that's their point... to be a "hunter" competition. In a way it equals the field. Guys that shoot okay can compete with better shooters since they don't score tens, elevens or twelves--only kill shots.

I've been there a few times and thoroughly enjoy it. But then, some days I'm an okay shooter. :^) It's by far the best 3-D range I've shot.

From: bowhunt
Date: 03-Jul-16

A kill shot is worth 5 points. All shots out of the kill score 0.I like the scoring. Its geared toward hunters and kill shots.

Its an excellent shoot all and all.Outside of the potential to cheat

How many targets? It said 50 but some scores are over 250. Do you shoot all 3 days or just one of the 3 days. Not much to separate the shooters.

From: Antlerart
Date: 04-Jul-16

They throw in a few bonus shots worth a few extra points if made

From: JRW
Date: 05-Jul-16

I'm sure it's a fun time and all, but if you want a REAL traditional archery championship go to TN in a week and a half for the IBO Traditional World Championship. They have double scoring, broken groups and a peer grouped final round. Also, no one is allowed to shoot the course multiple times. You know, shoot once in an off class to pace off the targets and then shoot for real in your actual class. The IBO shoot isn't completely perfect (nothing is really), and some people have been caught doing shady stuff there too, but nothing like what you see elsewhere.

From: Pencil Breaker
Date: 21-Jul-16

I see Scott Roberts is back to his dirty tricks again. He took a few years break this time at least. Sad that over the years this one guy has pushed lots of competitive shooters away from going to such a good shoot. Its called national competition but nobody takes it serious anymore.

From: specklebellies

Have read enough about this place to know that the only way I would go there is if the IBO or ASA was running the tournament. Speck

Cloverdale is truly a great shoot. My wife and I have been there the last 16 years. Targets are set in such a way, that you will not likely lose any arrows, so no back-ups for finding arrows. Many of you folks take the pencil and paper way too seriously, instead of going out and just having great time with friends or family. Like I've said before, it,s a great shoot, it's their shoot so they can call it what they want. Me, I will be preparing myself for the hunt this fall, that's when I'll score mine.

From: specklebellies
Date: 22-Jul-16

Kurt I have heard alot of good things about Cloverdale and I'm sure yall have a great time. Maybe one day I will make it up there.@Yh22..."take scoring seriously", yes sir I do. I take the truth seriously as well. We live in a country where that makes you the odd man out it seems now. I also take my money seriously as well, and an 8hr drive to be lied to doesn't seem a good use of it at the present time, but maybe one day. Speck

What if a guy pays to shoot but doesnt take a score card. I dont care to score due to my low score if i did keep track.

From: Crow

I will be there. Its only 2 hrs from me. We all need to figure a way to meet up. Maybe all of us could have a tag on the back of our shirts. LW. like the rodeo guts do

competition ruins everything just have fun why is there a need to be the best. I would bet most people have had more fun learning how to shoot then trying to be the best

From: specklebellies
Date: 04-Dec-16

@bigdog...competition is kinda what made our country great. Speck

From: Sipsey River

Some like to compete, some don't. That is ok, compete if you want, don't if you don't want to, but in either case, have fun and enjoy the day.

From: Demmer
Date: 05-Dec-16

Competition only ruins it if you let it. But also so does bad shooting. I shoot all sorts of competitions and never let a bad day ruin anything. Shooting the highest is not a necessity of having a good time. Having a good time is on the individual.

Half the guys who go to Clovedale don't turn in score cards. It was that way from the very first one they had. The reason the attendance dropped had nothing to do with scores. Comptons set their up to coincide with cloverdale so close that most of the vendors went to comptons. People go to check out the vendors and bowyers and try out different bows.

Because a guy has good days n bad doesn't mean he cheats. I've been the brunt of that accusation crap so it's sore spot. If you win more than 1 or 2 shoots a year ur a cheater, just ask anyone. Yes there's cheaters in everything and always will be but most guys don't cheat. If it worries you shoot with em. I won a ton of shoots , 20 some in 1 year. Next thing I know is friends telling me guys are accusing me of cheating. I invited one big mouth to shoot with me and proceded to kick his butt. But that didn't shut it down. I Stopped turning in score cards. Then someone else got to win and I was a nice honest guy. Cry babys and poor losers ruin more shoots than cheaters.

From: GLF
Date: 05-Dec-16

Btw, anyone ever think some guys win a lot because they work their butts off shooting 7 days a week to the tune of many hundreds of arrows, and also practice at a clubs outdoor range on top of that. Sorry, my rants done.

From: JusPassin Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 05-Dec-16

Oh GLF, did you ever hit that one on the head. Had a guy a few years back in WI that wanted to shoot with me. I know why, he had gotten it in his head I was cheating. After the match which I beat him by about 40 points I never heard from him again. Hope he was satisfied.

I love the Cloverdale shoot, as I said before, wife and I been there last 16 years. I don't actually compete, however, I sometimes keep track of my kill shots. I go to have fun and prepare for the hunting season, that's when the score counts. On November 4th I shot dead center in the 10 ring of a nice 6 point buck. Hope to see all of you at Cloverdale, as well as, Compton and other shoots around this part of the country.
