First one of these I have seen for sale on the big site. Left handed to boot. I just love that rosewood. I'm hoping Larry can chime in and guess at the date. My guess is 1961 with bowyer #5 and the 76th one that year? Made by Howatt for Wasatch if I remember correctly. Does this equal the Palomar or the Catalina? At any rate, I thought it would be nice to share for future references.

I suppose so if you're in to old bows. To each his own.

I would like to find a Wasatch Rambler some day.

In many ways those old bows were customs...Larry Hatfield has said many times they would always build bows to customers requests if asked...and had Larry not worked for Damon Howatt all those years he would probably have had his own custom bow company

1961 bow. We stopped building them for Les around 1962-63. Just after Bob Paisley bought Howatts. They were an excellent bow. Think Howatt Catalina/ Palomar.

If I was a lefty I'd take that "old bow" with soul over three current bows. Howatt's from that era will shoot the lights out of my new ones.

Reminds me of my late 50's Monterey and Palomar with that beautiful bone coloured plastic on the belly of the riser. That was really neat stuff.

Another really cool thing is how the riser (especially the face) was replicated decades later in the Sabre. I think the Sabre was one of the nicest recurves Howatt ever made and it copied a lot of the attributes of the older models.

Here's a few more views of my Saber...amazing how much it looks like that Wasatch and the late 50's bows.

The whole bow strung...

Don't have a picture of the full bow unstrung but you can see how straight the limbs come off the riser compared to the 1997 Super Diablo to the left of it.

Fix that picture...the Saber is a 1998.

The reason it looks like the old bows was deliberate. I liked those bows so much I wanted to build something like them with modern materials. Sadly, not too many people figured out what a good bow that was and they faded quickly. Gail Martin and I shot them for years. Gail's favorite bow I ever built for him.

Hi Larry:

Thanks so much for your comments. It was my understanding that it was modelled after the old designs (one look confirms that!) so I was very pleased that you joined the thread to confirm that.

The Saber is an extraordinary bow and a review of past threads confirms that those who used them liked them a lot. Mine is very stable and fast. I will never part company with it and, given the rarity of ever seeing one up for sale, I suspect that others feel the same way.

I look at it in my bow rack next to the old Palomars, Monterey's Mamba's and Hunter's and have to say that you did a great job in modelling the old designs. Well done!!
