Maybe old topic but buying used VCR movies got me thinking that the movie is not about Hillbillies. It is an ad for Fred Bear archery. Lets hear what you all know about Bear Archery in this classic tragedy.apologize if old hat but the archery just really makes the whole movie.

I'm pretty sure that Bear donated all the equipment. Took a girl to that Movie on a first date. A bit awkward after to say the least. Burt got some pretty good penetration tho.

Hey Gun...I also went on a first date in Lethbridge with one of the most gorgeous blondes I have ever known...might not have been the best choice since there was no second date

Bear archery sent a rep to help train the actors, and supply the archery equipment.

James Dicky the books author was an avid bow hunter and canoeist .I think he actually at the last moment had to take some actors out and give them final tuition in canoeing and archery .I think it was bert Reynolds was the one that needed the extra tuition. He apparently was that kind of person and made a few enemies along the way.The official instructors and directors got annoyed. It was R rated when I was 12 so it was hard getting to see it I eventually did sneak in That squeal like a pig scene made it R rated.I read the book so it didn't really matter.I was really getting into bow hunting at that time in my life and thought it was a great movie.I did heaps of canoeing too and I am sure I terrified more than a few wild ducks and even got 1 or 2 ,but off the water and river bank , not on the wing though.Poaching. The Leatherwall "censors" removed my post the day after I posted it. Had a face to face with Burt Reynolds in his dressing room at CBS Studios back in June of 1990 where we spoke in depth about "Deliverance" and the making of the film, Fred Bear and the Magnesium takedown he shot during production. Too bad. I could go on and on, but you get the drift... Shoot Straight, rare breed

James Dicky also coached Burt Renyolds.

You can see it in the special behind the scenes section on the DVD.

The movie was about man finding inner strengths he never knew he had, and about man's destruction of nature.

I was too young in that 70's era but today i understand the worry Mr Dicky had with man destroying man's world. Funny same era is the iron eyes cody anti- litter commercial. I GET IT.

Owen jeffery working at bear at the time helped get the equipment together. I saw the TV version around 76/77 my older brother had a shakesphere bow and this movie really got my interest in archery started.

Bear took advantage of an opportunity to advertise for sure but the movie is not about archery. Most viewers don't give the bows much of a thought.

Bear was smart in getting into the movie, and any one of you would have done the same thing if given the chance. Also, there was an article in Bowhunter Magazine at the time that told a lot about the movie and subsequent shenanigans during filming. I was in my mid twenties when the movie came out so had no troubles with censorship. They said there that Fred gave them the expensive Bear Magnum arrows to use and they caught the guys shooting them out into the forest to see how far they could shoot. Fred was not one to see waste like that. 8^). They also said that Burt took to the bow very quickly and was quite good with it. His was a 45# Mag takedown, and John's was a 50# Kodiak Hunter.

You know if you want to discuss things at length that aren't traditional archery related, you can go to the community board and post what you like on this "free" archery site. The mods do what they are supposed to do, so if you follow the protocol that has been in effect for many years now, you won't have problems with deleted posts.

It's only Hollywood but the banjo was good

I always liked that movie cause it showed realistic arrow penetration with regular hunting weight bow, sharp broadhead and decent arrow weight. I'm burned out of watching movies were people hit by arrows (especially during wartime where the bow weights are typically heavier...) die from 3-4 inches of arrow penetration. I know it's done for affect since it looks better in the movies to die while clutching an arrow as you gasp your last than to have the arrow blow through you and die with just a hole in your chest and the blood soaked arrow in a tree 15ft behind you...

Iwander, Jon Voight used a Kodiak Hunter in the movie not a Grizzly.

Bert is shooting a Kodiak Hunter in that photo as well.

And the one Burt is shooting in that photo is not a Grizzly either. They didn't have riser overlays. It's a Kodiak Hunter.

From: Iwander

Good catch Kodiak! I heard that the kid couldn't really play the banjo either.

"him" not hime.

When Jon Voight was climbing the mountain (?) with his bow and that old time Quickee Quiver, I didn't have to be an expert to KNOW that something BAD was about to happen. ( TO HIM....Not that other actor in the squeal like a pig scene) My GUESS or INSTINCT was correct. Maybe THAT deal led to hoods on bow quivers? Just my 3 cents! Batman

From: Sawtooth

Dang. Burt looks like he's plastic in that photo.

From: EF Hutton

When Voight is climbing the mountain, support personnel are right there with him hammering in spikes, and a just in case rope.

You see that in the behind the scenes dvd.

You also see the Rebel flag license plate on front of the International Scout

Burt Reynolds is 80 and considering the life he's had he isn't doing too bad right now.

From: stykman
Date: 30-May-16

I always thought the broadhead wasn't sharp enough as he didn't get a complete pass through. Probably didn't know how to really sharpen a razorhead. :) One of my all time favorite movies.

From: EF Hutton
Date: 30-May-16

Yes he did get a complete pass thru- with the head.
