Hi guys, I finally got to shoot my new Timberhawk Strike XT today. It is really nice. Cocobolo and Zebrawood riser and Black glass limbs. Really sharp looking. I got the 60" AMO model set up three fingers under and 47# at 28". Here is a picture of one of my arrow groups after getting warmed up. Haven't shot a bow in about six weeks. Been really busy. The bow is great. Scott Mitchell the bowyer has one of the best grips in my opinion in the business. It really feels comfortable in the hand. Scott is great to work with too. He built the bow just the way I wanted it. Also it really zips my 55-60 Douglas Fir arrows with 125 field tips an my GT 500 Trad carbon arrows great too. I have to say since I started trad archery last August I bought, traded, sold quite a few bows. Out of all of them this is one my top 3 favorites. The other two are a Holm-Made River Runner and a 1962 Bear Kodiak. So if you are in the market for a great recurve bow talk with Scott at TimberHawk bows. I would like to wish all my fellow Leatherwallers a great Summer. Keep shootin' straight.

Yea, but mine has Cocobolo in the grip area and Zebrawood on the back. Yours looks great too EF. I have to admit a picture of your bow and good things you said about the TimerHawk Strike XT inspired me to have Scott build me one. Thanks.

TimberHawks are great bows. I love the lines in the riser. Great recurves for sure.

I love my Timberhawks, I have two falcon longbows and a talon hunter. I haven't acquired a strike yet, it will be the next bow I get. They are great bows, the recurves get a lot of good comments about the grip, but Scott did a great job will the grip on the longbows as well, they tend to get overlooked some

Here my Talon hunter

Here my favorite of all- my 62" 49# falcon, what sweet smooth shooter. The grip is the best I've handled on a longbow

I'd like to ask you this question on one of the best grips in your opinion please? How many grips and bows have you had in your hand?

This grip you refer to I understand it fits you to your liking and that's great. I had mine slimmed down a little when I had mine built couple years ago though because I didn't like the bulk as much.

Don't get me wrong I like a full grip but then I can shoot any grip usally.

Scott builds a great bow but not the best if he slimmed his bows down I think they would be more desirable. These bows are not easy to sell either and that's a shame and always said that because they are good bows that generally shoot well for anyone that I knew that had one or still does have one. I've had a few of them.

Heres my stealth thats purty.

You also may want to change strings to FF skinny string when I did I picked up a good amount of speed and it got more performance. Scott don't recommend it but I do and the strings get changed out on all my bows from the bowyers to get more out of the bow I found. These pictures shown are when I first got the bow in 2012. I don't shoot the bow anymore but thought about going back to it recently I always loved my stealth.

Didn't care for his long bow that's more like a flat bow. He buoilt me a gorgious one with bone tips and backing the first he ever did and don't shoot that bow either though.

From: indianalongbowshoote

I didn't have any trouble selling mine got rid of each one after being for sale for a couple days..Scott will make the grip however you want..

From: md5252
Date: 28-May-16

Ryman Cat, with all due respect your rambling comments are all over the map.

Grips are a personal preference thing and one grip will be loved by some and hated by others. That being said, I've never heard any negative comments on a TH grip. I've also never heard him say not to use a skinny FF string.

I've had and shot a few TH's and they all shot well for me. Never had a prob selling one and they don't show up in the classifieds very often

From: RymanCat
Date: 28-May-16

Augh must be the pain meds still taking some.LOL

Glad I had mine slimmed down though its so much nicer than the norm I felt when I got it. Maybe recently the skinnys have been excepted but when I got my stealth built it wasn't. Now a days anyone that's switching strings out gets the benefit and its noticeable.

English critics stick your pen in darkness.LOL

From: indianalongbowshoote
Date: 29-May-16

I believe Scott likes heavier strings but says you can use skinny strings they wont hurt anything.

From: Pete P
Date: 29-May-16

theres these things out there with wheels called compounds....if you want speed go that route. if a bowyer is saying dont do FF then i wouldnt do FF....to gain 6-8fps. ever yr on the other trad site someone does a run down of the K zoo show. when Scott is there everyones talking about his bow. I've handled one, it was absolutely flawless and smooth.

From: Pete P
Date: 29-May-16

Zackola, thats a beauty! i'll need to get one some day, thanks for sharing

From: jimreed
Date: 29-May-16

Darn, I wish you guys would quit doing the picture thing. Now I want to get one. Those are great looking bows. But, every time I get a great looking one, I put it away and don't shoot it. I want it to keep looking great. When I decide to shoot one of them, I usually trip going out the door and then feel bad the rest of the day. Then the next day I don't mind shooting it. I don't have to worry anymore.

From: indianalongbowshoote
Date: 29-May-16

Scott doesn't say anything about not using FF he puts 14 strand FF strings on his bows, his son made me a couple when I bought my Premier at Cloverdale last year. Everyone ones at least some speed oe we would all be shooting 35-40# bows to hunt with since speed isn't important. Compounds don't have wheels anymore haven't since the late 80`s early 90`s they have cams now:)

From: RymanCat
Date: 29-May-16

Skinny string are less than FF tight materials 6 to 8 strands to 10 will not hurt the bow.Out of 45 I got 190 thats fast now isn't it.

You guys want to shoot tow ropes keep on. Until you try a 6 or 8 strand you won't ever learn the differences. Scotts bows are over built and can take it.Padded loops cussions.

From: Pete P
Date: 29-May-16

i dont know is it?? what grain per #. you could get 220 out of it with the right arrow.

From: Pete P
Date: 29-May-16

or the wrong arrow i should say. yep 190 is fast, especially if thats 9 gr/#

From: Patrick
Date: 29-May-16

It seems like very time a thread on TimberHawks comes up, it seems to bring up a debate that goes nowhere and does nothing but hurt a great bowyer and outstanding man. I'm not trying to stir the pot any further but it sure seems to be that way... Pat.

From: grizz
Date: 29-May-16

Pat, you are correct. And it's a shame.

From: RymanCat
Date: 29-May-16

Take your tow ropes off and see how much easier you will have to quiet these bows and get tunned. I think you are stiring the pot.LOL

I gave my findings and some of you would think you own the company. Maybe you don't know or maybe you haven't had enough bows to know the differences? LOL

Fat bows are like fat girls you either prefer them or not. If you like beef these have them and usally it is a person who knows about these bows that buy them too. That's a shame because they are good bows and if you shoot them you know. That's the credit to these bows and the fact that Scotts a brother but that don't excuse things that are disliked or one might have issues with now does it?

You really don't want to hear the negative I haven't stated any I feel however there are things that I require in my bows normally that I like and I pointed it out and now there's cryers. But then there always are cryers anyways.LOL

That's the sad part the twisters and minipulators get into things always.

A 15 /35 arrow with 125 on nose is plenty fast for a 43 pond bow getting 190 out of it.

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 29-May-16

Hey Cat, check your meds my friend, me thinks you may have double dosed on something. 8^).

Scott makes great bows that shoot plenty well. If you don't like them, that isn't a problem with the bow.

From: RymanCat
Date: 29-May-16

Did I say I didn't like them? I said what I found with the ones I have and had also how I improved mine.LOL

Think I'm getting a a bad deal here.LOL

Like I said not enough knowledge I think is at play with one bow know all's.LOL

Aren't you also an advocate of skinny strings George to. One out of 4 that I liked that's good odds isn't it.

The one I liked the stealth needs refinish also. I have 40 year old bows that don't need refinishing the gloss didn't hold up on the stealth. Guess I'll send out and have redone if I don't sell it.

From: RymanCat
Date: 29-May-16

Also some may want to learn what a skinny string is its not 12 up either, whether FF or not. Lack of knowledge rampart with TM's and pot stirs.LOL

From: George D. Stout Compton's Traditional Bowhunters
Date: 30-May-16

Hey Cat, yessir...I love the skinny strings and use them. Guys will argue their arses off though that they aren't any better so I quit talking them up....unless specifically asked. I'm using a skinny FF on my 1970 Carroll's takedown.

Many bows don't always fit every shooter for sure, you either get rid of them or make them work. One guys fat bow is another's perfect match. Hope you are getting better health wise Glenn.

From: indianalongbowshoote
Date: 30-May-16

Had lots of 6,8 and 10 strand strings by custom string makers, while I like them and they do help bow performance some I can get a bow just as quiet with a 12-14 strand D-97 string or any other FF string for that matter its just taking the time to tune the bow.Plus I like the feel of a 12 strand string better then a 8 strand, but that's personal preference just like 99 percent of owning a bow is.

From: md5252
Date: 30-May-16

This thread got off the rails a bit, as some threads often do..

I don't think anything neg was said about Scott or his bows or that they eventually get bashed on Timberhawk threads. It may seem that way to some but not to me.

Even kooky Glenn (Ryman Cat) has said all good things as far as I can tell, although its hard to read his posts. Preferring a slimmer grip is a personal thing and not a critique of Scott.

Bottom line is these are great bows made by a great person and probably the best value in trad archery

From: cecil
Date: 30-May-16

Nice bow!

From: indianalongbowshoote
Date: 30-May-16

Bottom line is Scott makes one of the best shooting bows out there no matter what strings on it or how fast its shooting..

My Strike has the actionwood cores. It is 51 @ 28

My Talon Premier has the bamboo cores. It is 52 @ 28

They both chrono the same. 182 consistently

Getting stronger George yes but just not strong enough yet to shoot again. Guys even argue when they don't have a clue what they are talking about. Takes maturity to know the difference and then see what they have and have done in life to see whether they really know what they are talking about.

I got an average on my 43 weight stealth of 190 with 15 / 35 at 30 inch length with the correct string.LOL

They were 190 to 194 so I averaged it at 190 best out of 6 shots through the crono last I tested it.

I always thought I had a pretty good release that does factor in as well. That's why I had my bow trimmed down to take out the fat. You guys would have to look hard and long before you matched up with my bows Scott built. He's not a gloss guy either and my gloss didn't co,me out very well for me.

But then those who know me know how particulair I am and like to have things done right with minimal of flaws if I can get get. Not affraid to pay for t either its just a shame that quaility is hard to get these days.

Ever wonder why bowyers like the flat finishs? LOL

Figuire it out its not hard? Doen't show the flaws like gloss does.

No wonder your bows are slow him the air craft carrier hawsers.LOL

Thanks for all the replies. I posted this to share my info about what a great value the Strike recurve is. I know there are some people still on the fence about them but they are a great deal. I'm going to get a basic Strike for my Grandson with Shedua wood riser and black limbs. Scott sells these for $379.00 with case and bowstringer. You can't go wrong. Scott will make the grip anyway you want it. For me I told him I liked the Bear Kodiak grips to give the example of the thickness I wanted and he took it from there. Right now I am using a FF string Linda Brakenbury out of Oregon made for me. You guys really showed me a lot of string opinions LOL. Anyway just wanted to pass a great value on to my fellow Leatherwallers.

From: EF Hutton
Date: 31-May-16

Scott also does the brown limb glass.

From: RymanCat
Date: 31-May-16

For that price is unreal for a bow of this caliber and I'm serious too . I didn't realize the no frills bows are that cheap. I had a cheap one that I got with 2 sets of limbs that was 400.00 alone.

The brown glass is a nice look also if your into the plain janes that's why my bows I have built are lots more the woods escalate the prices and gloss finishs.

You really won't know until you shoot the bow if you will like it but even my stealth when I first opened the box I thought it might have come from Blacktail.LOL

I'd put my bow up against some of the blacktails I've had with my stealth I have.LOL

From: EF Hutton
Date: 31-May-16

I use the string Scott makes for me.

I use the size tires that Ford put on my Ranger. They spent millions on lab testing so all the bearings, gears, rpm curves etc work in harmony.
