I just picked up a Herters Perfection. It has a curved shelf. I've never seen that on a bow. What do I use for a rest? Second question or more of a curiosity... That label says Model Perfection 56 inch. String length 49 1/2 inch. What happened to the AMO standard. The serial number is 560870048. Do you know of any good sources to get information on this bow?

They are very good shooters. Most Herters from that era (in fact most period) utilized their specific version of a brush rest. You may be able to find someone willing to sell you one, or you can substitute any number of other stick on rests. AMO came along in 1966. Most Herters I've seen are labeled like yours. Not sure if yours predates '66 or if the AMO designation was considered "optional"?

I found this on another site. It appears mine was made in 1970.

Take a look at the serial number. Most of the Herters bows (recurves) made prior to 1971 were made with Brazilian Rosewood. Afterwords, walnut and other woods, including some rosewoods. 580669003 serial number would mean: Bow length (58"), bow manufactured in June (06), year manufactured 19XX (69), and number of bows built that month (003).

A custom trimmed feather rest. That's what I did on the one I had. JF

had a 62" herters perfection Sitka that took a 56" string and had that type shelf. it did not have a hole in the riser for the brush rest. just put arrow on string, pull a little tension on string and draw and release, arrow will line itself up. it works to uh....perfection

You can use any type of elevated rest with ease. A Bear weather rest and Hoyt type come to mind. I've never used a brush type of rest so I can't speak of them. Take a look at 3R. Lance.

My Herters does not have the hole for their rest so I'll look into the suggestions posted. Thanks guys.

I have one with exact riser, just put a sticky type rest on and trimmed it appropriately

I had a Perfection Sambar and it had a conventional shelf. No idea what year it was. It had butterscotch glass.

Got it in a bundle of bows and did not keep it since it was left handed. It brought a pretty good price on the 'bay.

Thanks for the generous offer Wingbear. I followed your advice and just bought three on eBay. Longcruise, mine has butterscotch limbs on the back and black on the belly.

Herter's never followed AMO suggestions. All you do is subtract two inches from whatever they mark their bows to get AMO. Herter's made many bows with a curved shelf; so did Bear for that matter on their target models from time to time. Just use any stick on rest. I've used stick-on rests since 1967 on all of my recurves...even before neotrads thought it wasn't "trad."

Your bow was made in August 1970...your bow would be just over 53" AMO. As George said they never adopted AMO but were tip to tip.

So that would require a 50" string if the AMO was actually 53". The decal states a 49 1/2" string is required. That makes a lot more sense.

My estimate of AMO was approximate as the length of the tips is unknown. Simply use the recommended string length. Works on all the Herter's in my collection.

The bow would be just under 53" AMO. Made a math error. Sorry!
