I watched as all of you Bear takedown nuts raved on and on how great they were so I had to try one. I picked up an A handle and a set of #1 limbs. The limbs were marked 55 lbs but scaled at 60 lbs. It was super quiet and shot well but after a few shots my groups opened up. I havn't shot that heavy in 15 years. I ordered a lighter set of #3s, 52 lbs from Big Jim and WOW! Love this set up. Quiet and shoots where I'm looking. You Bear guys aren't so crazy after all.

Question for you. What brace height for the A handle and #3 limbs do you recommend? Thanks!

Bear usually says between 7 1/2 and 8". I like my Bears at 7 3/4. I did raise my BH another 1/8" for my new Bigfoot limbs. Not sure why but it just shoots better. You will enjoy the longer limbs, I sold off my short limbs. Much smoother draw for me as well.

All of my Bear Takedowns are B-risers with #1 limbs ( total bow length 60" ) and approx 60#@28". I have two extra sets of limbs that are 67#@28" for elk hunting. Mine are braced at 8". I just bought a 2016 Bear Takedown in black maple. Can't wait to shoot it. My first bow was a Bear bow back in 1970.

longbeauxman,

Since your Bear Takedown is an A-riser with #3 limbs totaling an AMO of 60" you would want a brace height of 7" to 8" that's recommended. But it isn't etched in stone.

Mountain Man, that right there is funny. Cold but funny.

From: Mountain Man

Hey man,if you poke a grizz with a stick your gona get malled If you think ones your friend and try living with it your food Common sence seems to be a rare trait these days : ) But anyway i shot my Bear take down at 7 3/4"

Great info all. I was thinking I might go 8". Just wondering what most with that rig usually braced up at. These new #3s are a slimmer limb, almost like a longbow. Real sweet limb, very smooth. Can anyone tell me more about the handle with the Fred coin?

Yellow Dog, I contacted Jorge Coppen who wrote the book Bear Archery Traditional Bows: A Chronological History and he said:

Jorge Coppen 1998 to 2003 is correct. I have a 98 TD first year of the Fred Bear coin. I also had a brand new 1992 Kodiak with the button medallion if I recall. I'm sure he is mistaken.

Your bow is properly newer, or someone switched the coin.

That's alright Yellow Dog. For years I thought I had a 2000 Bear Grizzly, only to find out from Bear Archery it was a 1998. "LOL"

I'm waiting for my Bow from Big Jim's. Backorder on the Riser. I'm getting an "A" riser with #3 limbs at 60". Should be about 42# @ 28". I've shot Traditional for almost 60 years and never owned a Bear hunting bow. I should hang my head in shame, altho shot many Widows through the years, and they're hard to beat. I'll let you know how I like the Bear. Joel

My 1996 Bear Kodiak Takedown. Bear Archery only made the takedown in this finish ( called traditional camo ) for one year. According to Bear Archery less than twenty-five were made in this finish.

After wanting one of these bows since 1970 I'm finally getting one this coming September. The grandsons and I went to Blackhawk's to do some shooting and he graciously let me shoot his A with #1 limbs and I was hooked after one shot. 20 yards and the arrow went right where I wanted it to. I told Lon I might have to sell some bows...HA! Going to Colorado to stay with my long lost step-sister for a week and she lives 20 minutes from RMSGear! Lance.

From: Grizbow

Kodiaktd, those snakeskin dipped limbs look awesome!! And Knifeguy/Lance you HAVE to stop by RMSgear, totally worth it there's so many bows it's not funny....its awesome I shot a new 59 Kodiak and and older super K I believe it was made in the 80s both 55# and you know I shot the older dinged up bow better I also think it was a bit faster I just was shooting a mix of 340 and 400 spine carbons they had in the buckets for the range, but I was really surprised at both bows accuracy for it being the first time I picked either of them up, I was tempted on purchasing the super K I think it's still for sale on their website and I even wrote the stock number down on it...have to see if I can find it again, anyway Lance Rmsgear good and red boa snakeskin dipped limbs awesome kodiak td!! -Caleb

Caleb, Thanks. I like the way the limbs turned out. They match the riser pretty good. And you couldn't beat the price.

From: Grizbow
Date: 12-Jul-16

In reply to my own above thread rms gear still has that super K :) I found the stock number but if y'all want to know what it is you'll have to find it yourselves ;)
