I am new to TRAD Bows. I have a 59 DH Palomar and a 62 Fasco Sonic. Both came with Stick on Arrow rests. I want to shoot both of these "Off the Shelf". I have looked at the BEAR version, and some others, but feel it would be relatively easy to make my own. I would love to see some of YOUR designs and styles!! Recommendations of adhesives that wont hurt the Shellac finish? ALSO...What kind of recommendations of Padding or HIGH points to help arrow movement and flight? Thanks, TJ

Pretty easy and effective to just use self adhering Velcro (the fuzzy side). I'm assuming a flat shelf. Some people use a piece of toothpick, but I just use a small strip of rawhide, and stick the Velcro on top of it to create a ridge on the flat surface. Do the same thing for the side plate. The side plate may take a little more adjustment depending on the thickness of whatever strip of material you decide to use. One thing to note is that the adhesive on the Velcro isn't that strong. Try to get it right the first time, otherwise if you have to peel it off, and stick it back on, the adhesive may not be secure.

I have been using a homemade feather rest for the last month. I love it. You can but them at 3 Rivers Archery or make your own from a bit of fletching.

Here are some rest examples...this is ringed seal with a thin leather side plate. I like that shape and use it on any bows I refurbish. I get the leather from old wallets and purses.

I don't often put an index piece on the shelf. My experience is that a flat shelf is not truly flat and it does not make any difference in performance that I can detect.

Here's 1/4" mohair from Wooster paint rollers. This is really nice stuff and wears well. Some have said it's the same material as Bear rests. You can make a lifetime worth of rests from a package of three rollers.

I use contact cement to affix the shelves and side plates.

I trace a pattern onto thin boxboard then transfer the outline to the shelf material.

This is a leather rest with an index point folded to make a side plate. It was on the bow when I bought it. One piece of leather to do both. Works well.

Last one is Velcro with a commercial side plate.

Thanks for some very CREATIVE and SIMPLE design ideas! Pdiddly, You have some very COOL old recurves! So, do most of you find it Unnecessary to use an index or raised points under your materials?

I've always understood that when you use a raised bump under the shelf or rest it should be in line with the pivot point of the grip.

Pivot point is where the bump should be but the arrow does not spend a lot of time on the shelf after release.

Don't give up on the stick on rest so quickly. Shoot it a bit. Do you now if it is a Bear Weather Rest?

If the bow has a flat shelf, I always put a bump under it. Also have been known to take a rasp to the window and radius the shelf and the sight window. LOL

Thanks...I think a real nice rest and side plate is the finishing touch to a nice refinish.
